US Department of State to invest $16.5 million in Kindles and Kindle Books

Amazon have just been awarded a contract to supply Kindle e-readers and content to the US Department of State in a deal estimated to be worth $16.5 million.

Amazon's Kindle was chosen over rivals from Barnes and Noble, Sony and Kobo due to their lack of text-to-speech functionality. The iPad also lost out to the Kindle due to the costs and wider security issues with a non dedicated reading device. While many criticised the text-to-speech facility, this looks like a big win for Amazon.
