Amazon release the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" in the UK and Europe
It's taken Amazon a little while to get around to it, but now the Kindle Fire HD is available in its highest spec featuring an 8,9 inch screen. Available in two flavours, 16gb and 32gb, is the new Fire set to steal Apple and Google's thunder?
We're quite used to being at the back of the queue when it comes to hardware releases from major companies in the US and Japan, so it was quite a surprise to find Amazon have released their flagship tablet in the UK early in 2013. The Kindle Fire in its 7" form has been on the shelves a while now and overall it's been fairly well received. With the launch of the 8.9" Kindle Fire, there's no longer an excuse to wait before purchasing. With a larger screen capable of showing movies in full HD glory the new Kindle Fire can finally stand up to its more expensive cousin the iPad.
Priced at £229 for a 16gb version and £259 for a 32gb version, there is less of a marked difference for your extra £30 than between the standard Kindle Fire and the 7" Kindle Fire HD, but in comparison to other tablets, the price tag for an extra 16gb or storage isn't much to gripe about.
One area in which the Kindle Fire HD beats the competition hands down is audio output, With built in stereo speakers and Dolby audio processing, films on the Kindle Fire HD sound just as good as they look, so with the inclusion of a larger screen and integrated LoveFilm, Amazon's new tablet is as close as you can get to a portable cinema.
