About H.E. Bulstrode

An author of a series of standalone novellas and novelettes set in the West Country, liberally laced with an element of the supernatural and the uncanny, and shot through with a pronounced vein of wry humour. From the acid-fried occult oddity of 'Gwydion's Dawn', to the bizarre rites of seventeenth-century Devon in 'The Cleft Owl'; the psychological horror of '3:05 am', to the vengeful fury of 'Old Crotchet', all are as distinctly odd, and unsettling, as the seemingly innocuous guide in 'Agnes of Grimstone Peverell'. As for 'The Rude Woman of Cerne', it would seem that the mysterious 'hedger' has something in mind for her.

The comedy is black, and the protagonists all too unawares of the sinister forces that lurk beneath the fragile veneer of the everyday world; shifting and malevolent, they are there to be seen, and sensed, if the characters should but care to look, yet more often than not, they do not. The forces of the irrational, the supernatural and the paranormal bide their time, waiting to irrupt through the divide and come crashing into the present, with a vividness as unwelcome as it is unexpected.

What is it that unites Robert Tooley with Gwydion Turner, or ‘Old Crotchet’ with Agnes? There are clues, but they are for you to unravel (Beatrice Clemens never cared to look into them, fool that she was). The threads that link them may not become clear for some time to come, but each of these tales is self-contained, and may be read as such. Five of these stories are gathered together in 'Anthology: Wry Out West', which is available in both Kindle ebook and paperback for those who prefer hard copy:

'Old Crotchet'
'Gwydion's Dawn'
'Agnes of Grimstone Peverell'
'3:05 am'
'The Cleft Owl'

Bulstrode’s novel – ‘Pendrummel: Gwen Gwinnel’s Return’ – will be published later this year in both Kindle and paperback formats. The action opens in seventeenth-century Cornwall, where the villagers of Porthcarrack are beset with superstitious fears arising from a report of a supernatural visitation; fears that are dismissed by Thomas Pendrummel, who appears intent to press on with his latest voyage, but at what, if any, cost? An age-old and all-too-real threat, animated by greed, and underpinned by a lurid religious fanaticism, lurks somewhere out to sea, stalking the imaginations of the parishioners.
