RE: Switch off the WiFi Kindle for takeoff and landing

I don't have WiFi/3G turned on when I'm on a flight, but I'm still told to "turn it off please" on take off and landing. I just put it into sleep mode and close the cover and everyone is happy! Smile

RE: Switch off the WiFi Kindle for takeoff and landing

It's impossible for cabin staff to have a detailed knowledge of every electronic device carried on board an aircraft by passengers. It's also impossible for them to know the technical ins and outs of the 'risk' to the aircraft (real or perceived) by any particular device. In any event you will never get anywhere by trying to 'educate' (or disagree / argue - as they would see it) with someone who is required as an unconditional part of their job to ensure that passengers comply with whatever take-off & landing procedures exist for an aircraft.

So, in the end, who cares? Just comply with a smile, switch your Kindlypoo to the 'off' position, sit back close your eyes & relax for the following 10 minutes and enjoy the rise from or decent to Terra Firma.

After all, you don't want to be lumped into the same group as those unreasonable prats who refuse to turn off their mobile phones in petrol stations Wink

Didn't know you had to turn your mobile off at petrol stations.
Can't see why, and it would be unenforceable anyway..

A lot is taken on trust when you are using electronic gadgets on aircraft.
It must be a nuisance effect on the the avionics. If there was a real danger
it would have been exploited by the ruthless people. I would have thought
it would be easy to detect the frequencies used by personal electronic devices
as they have fixed/limited power & frequencies.

You are quite right, it is rubbish (and I said it as a joke) ...... it's just one of those things that was introduced in the early days of mobile use and grew into an urban myth, unfortunately taken up by petrol companies. So, now you see those little signs (image of a mobile with a line through) stuck up next to pumps. I have actually been asked to turn mine off (with no reasonable explanation as to why) on one occasion.

But the main point is that it's just some poor ordinary Jo's (or Jo-ess's) job to get the punters to comply with the 'policy' however well or poorly founded ........ so it's just easier all round to comply and give them a smile.
