RE: How important is having an original approach to the story-telling?

That's where an unusual approach works. But it's becomming much more common, I notice, so it's not really an original approach any more, even if we thought it was an original approach at the time.It's got to feel right and not forced.
Some stories in present tense feel all wrong, and yet for others, they could not be written any other way.
