What I Read

The Great British Bake Off

Am I sad case for loving this programme? (second one tonight at 8pm). I don't even bake very much, but I love watching it - for the wonderful concoctions and the ones that leave me grasping in horror! And Mary Berry is fantastic - such a kind and lovely lady! Only trouble is that I find Sue Perkins quite irritating.

I've never really got into that one - Come Dine With Me is my weapon of choice for cookery programmes, followed by Man v Food for sheer gluttony.

In fact got Come Dine with Me on now - and there is a very colourful woman called Jude reading aloud from her erotic novel - something to do with phone sex, in between the main course and the dessert.

RE: The Great British Bake Off

Think we must be the only two who love it Susanne. I have watched every series from the beginning and think the challenges this time are definitely a lot harder than normal. Some of the flavour combinations are not what I would choose, but others come up with remarkable looking baking. I thought the 8 strand plaits were a real mixture last night, some looked like a mangled mess, yet a couple looked very professional indeed. I think Mary Berry is so nice and gracious to all of the contestants, even when things go horribly wrong, and I have to admit I do have a soft spot for Paul Hollywood, as my Grandad was a master baker and confectioner a hundred years ago (I have all his hand written recipes and medals from competitions he used to do), so I can understand his obsession with baking.

That's wonderful, sujay. Have you ever tried his recipes?

RE: The Great British Bake Off

I haven't been able to really, because they were written to be made in commercial quantities, also he never included any methods in his recipes, only the results he got and any changes he thought he needed to make each time. They are all written in the most gorgeous copperplate writing which I would love to be able to copy, but my writing looks like a spider has crawled across the page! Smile

RE: The Great British Bake Off

I watch this occasionally, don't bake or anything myself, but I love watching to see what they come up with. I'm not normally a fan of any cookery shows, and don't go out of my way to watch it, but whenever I do see it, I enjoy it so I probably should watch it more often. I quite like the format and all the presenters in it, none of them particularly grate!

RE: The Great British Bake Off

My wife got hooked on baking after watching the The Great British Bake off and now my wait band's gone up two sizes. I had a heart attack a few years ago, so perhaps she's trying to see me off.

RE: The Great British Bake Off

Ah, The Great British Bake Off is one of my guilty pleasures. I tend to watch it alone now though, as I tend to "ooh", "mmm" and "oooff" too much at the finished products. I put on about 3lbs just watching!
