Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence
I've just finished reading this after coming across it in some Amazon fantasy recommendations and I can honestly say that it's the best fantasy book I've read in a very long time.
From what I understand, there has been a bit of controversy over the main character who is more than a little malicious on occasion. This may upset readers of some of the more traditional fantasy books, but here it makes for a genuinely thrilling a character strong enough to keep you up well after bed time. If you are a fan of Joe Abercrombie (and perhaps George R R Martin) then you will be right at home with Prince of Thorns and its gritty no-holds-barred storyline.
What makes the story even more interesting is a little chaos thrown into the plot around midway. If you don't want to spoil anything, look away now. Spoiler
As fate would have it, the second book in the series, King of Thorns has literally just been released. I am right off to buy my copy now.
