Any review process will be open to abuse. I think most consumers are savvy enough to be able to spot most of the fake reviews (good or bad). As well as that, when readers frequent forums like KUF or Goodreads or whatever, they get to know the genuine reviewers and therefore pay attention to their opinions.

I will prefix this next statement with "I would say this, wouldn't I?"... but it's true. I know at least three of the people who posted 4/5* reviews on Amazon for my book, Dark Tidings, but I believe they are all genuine reviews from friends who liked the book and wanted to help me. Having said that, if a friend had hated the book (and I don't know of any Smile), I'd have expected them to tell me privately and not post a bad review.
Ancient magic meets the Internet - life will never be the same again.
