This is billed as "a love story... but with a difference". As a love story (difference or otherwise) it was a very compelling read. I read it non stop this morning.

It's written from three people's point a view, Martin, Lisa and Martin's mum. You knew where the story was going right from the beginning, but I wanted to be part of the journey. My heart felt for Martin and Lisa, but understood that times were different 40-odd years ago. No mobile phones or internet. Just the postman and home phones. I so wanted to bang their heads together and tell them "just talk to him/her". It wasn't mawkish, just a story of what could have been.

I really enjoyed this and did have to have a good nose blow at the end (tmi Big Grin )
Please put a bowl of water out for hedgehogs and other night-time visitors, you might just save their life.
While you are at it, feed the birds too. Thumbs Up And come and talk about it at Garden Wildlife Forum

Thanks for your review joo Smile

I've not been reading for a few weeks and needed something to 'kick me off' again. This book seems to be so unusual that I thought I'd give it a bash. In fact Roger Knowles seems to have a strong following and with all his novels being so different and engaging. I'd not heard of him before, thanks for the heads up Smile

TVM Elaine, might just try some more by Roger Knowles Smile

I must say that I enjoyed To Be A Man by Roger Knowles very much indeedy. It's a simple story written in simple prose (and none the worse for that). The lives & loves of two ordinary young people who can't express their feelings for/to each other (perhaps like many more of us than we'd care to admit). The deepest of loves between a young boy/man and young girl/woman through their early lives laced with the expectations of family and friends and the intrusion of circumstance ........ the unspoken truths and the effect they have on their lives and the people surrounding them. Not a long read (somehow I wish it had been longer) but very engaging. If this had been a TV drama it would have been a screen play by Jimmy McGovern.

Give yourself a treat
