Buying eBooks with paypal?

This post was last modified: 28 Jul 2012 08:35 AM by Daphne.
I have a small amount of money slooshing around in paypal and don't seem to be able to spend it anywhere I fancy. What I really want is to buy more ebooks, but of course Amazon doesn't accept paypal payments. I notice that I could buy books from Kobo - but I only have a Kindle or a tablet (on which I can put ePubs - which seems to be the Kobo format). Does anyone know if I can buy books online at Kobo and somehow put them on my Kindle or tablet?
P.S. - I have bought some from Smashwords using paypal.

As it says the Kobo books are DRM free, it should be possible to buy them, download them to your computer and convert them via e.g. Calibre (free programme). Afterwards you can e-mail them to your kindle. But can´t you buy them directly as you have a tablet?

My books are on Smashwords, but I believe you have bought my novel already? Wink

I used paypal to buy books from Smashwords.

Isn't there anything you fancy buying from ebay? You could buy some birdfood from Maltbys Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

Thanks Dorte and Joo.Smile I am the happy owner of your novel and one of your shorts, Dorte, on my Kindle from Amazon, but I do also look on Smashwords from time to time. Sounds like I can buy books from Kobo and put them directly onto my tablet - I will go off and try. Will I need to download a Kobo application? I prefer reading on my Kindle because the e-ink makes it so easy to read in the sun, but my tablet is ok in the evening. I've never mastered the whole Calibre thing - my fault for being lazy with anything technical.
I've only ever bought one thing from ebay, Joo - no reason, just didn't get into the swing of it. Perhaps I ought to venture on there more often. I really want some more Harry Potter ebooks, but Pottermore doesn't take paypal.Kindle Sad

RE: Buying eBooks with paypal?

Where does it say Kobo books are DRM free, because they're not. If you buy from Kobo you can read them on other ereaders that use epub (because Adobe DRM which epubs use is transferable between devices if registered to the same user), but you won't be able to use Calibre to convert them to a format for the Kindle to read unless you remove the DRM from it.

From the Kobo FAQ:

3. Which devices can I use to read Kobo eBooks?
You can read Kobo eBooks on most eReaders. Kobo eBooks are produced in the ePub DRM format - this is a common format and is accepted by most devices. They cannot be read on Kindle however - only eBooks bought from Amazon are accepted on this device. If you're unsure whether your device accepts ePub DRM, please check your product manual.

Sorry, I didn´t check anyone else´s books. Mine are DRM-free so it depends on the author or publisher´s choice, actually.

Yep you have to be very careful to make sure a book is DRM free before buying it, checking WH Smith/Kobo, even a lot of the free books have Adobe DRM. I know you used to be able to tell on Amazon but don't see any that still state 'unlimited device usage' on there?

Smashwords really is the best place to go for DRM free & paypal.

Thanks, everyone. I've downloaded Kobo for PC and have just bought one book. Can't get it on my tablet, though - I think it just won't support the Kobo app. Thanks, l_macd, for the Kobo FAQ link.Smile And Smashwords does seem to be the best place; it is just that there are some books I want that aren't on there. Perhaps the day will come when all ebooks will be transferable to all ereaders.

If you are willing to learn how to do it, it's not too difficult. I remove DRM from all the books I buy so that I can read them on whatever ereader I want and back-up all my books. That way, if anything ever happens to my Kindle, I won't have to rely on Amazon's cloud storage to get my books back, and if I wanted to buy another e-reader altogether, I'd still be able to read all those books I've bought and wouldn't have to stick with a Kindle.

Edited to add: I found another shop you can use Paypal to buy books from BooksOnBoard, but they are epub with DRM so only any use to you if you are happy to remove it.

I too wish Amazon had an option to pay with PayPal as I tend to collect little bits and pieces in my personal account. I guess though that PayPal's cut would be much more than Amazon pay in bank fees, so it'll probably never happen.
