Kindle Touch Security Vulnerability

It's slightly old news as it was first discovered back in May by some hackers on the Mobile Read forums, but now it is starting to gain some media attention.

Kindle Touch firmware version 5.1.0 added a new plugin framework for the built in web browser, and through this a maliciously coded website could effectively gain control of the Kindle Touch to access files and data as well as the 3G and Wi-Fi connection.

Amazon are apparently aware of this vulnerability but have not yet taken steps to close the loophole.

Our advice to Kindle Touch owners is to stick to browsing only reputable websites and downloading books from reputable sources for the time being. Also to turn off Wi-Fi when it is not being used.

Amazon have just released version 5.1.2 for the Touch, which fixes a known bug in 5.1.0. So this vulnerability might have been closed.

Edited to remove reference to wi-fi mode, as I got confused on which Kindle introduced Aeroplane mode. It was only on the K4, right? Blush
