Price promotions

Q. How do indie authors publishing on the kdp do a price promotion? By this, I mean how do we get our books to show the original list price discounted on amazon's site with a red line through it and the promotional price listed beneath?

I'm wondering because I noticed some books recently promoted at 20p, rather than free, and this seems to me a very sensible marketing idea! Much better than joining the increasing ranks of free books, which are getting rather boring and give a false ranking that does not count when your book goes back to the paid list.

I know we could just change the price for a limited period, but this would presumably not show up as a promotion, just as a cheap book, which puts some readers off... I also think the minimum price amazon allows works out at something like 77p (plus VAT).

Any ideas? Or is this something only traditional publishers can do?

RE: Price promotions

This is an interesting question, I was also wondering how books managed to get priced at 20p? Hopefully somebody will reveal all.

RE: Price promotions

I heard a rumour this is amazon price matching a special 20p deal Sony have been making on certain titles, so not a new promotion after all. Not sure what royalty the authors will get from it, but I guess it's good publicity for their books.
