Question Copy Editor

If you are not being published by a traditional publisher, where they take care of everything, then I assume you use the services of a book cover designer and a copy editor. I was lucky finding a good book cover designer, but have not yet found a suitable copy editor.

Even though I have a limited budget, this is my first book and I want to get things right!

When finished the manuscript will be about 65,000 words; where can I find a good reasonably priced copy editor? And what should I expect to pay for their services?

Any advice welcomed.

RE: Copy Editor

Hi, David.

I use an editor in America. I am British and live and work in England but most English editors I've found are too expensive for me.
My editor charges 5 dollars (approx £3.25) per 1000 words, so your 65K novel woluld cost about £211.25. For this I get a full content edit, advice on plot and charcterization and a final proof read.

Finding an editor you can 'gel' with, one who understands your voice and style, is vital so it pays to shop around. Most editors will offer to do a sample edit for free or, at most, a small charge. italso depends on genre - no good sending yor chick lit romance to someone who prefers hard science fiction and vice versa.

Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations.

RE: Copy Editor

Hi David,

I've worked with a variety of editors and found that it's really a case of you get what you pay for. Whilst Lynda seems to have been lucky with a very low priced editor, I have been very disappointed with the editors at the cheaper end of the market. One actually introduced errors.

There are two excellent editors I particularly enjoy working with, Olivia Wood (http://www.textmender.com/) and Peter Van Der Merwe (website to be launched on Monday). Their prices vary depending on the project and amount of editorial feedback their feel is required but I strongly recommend asking either/both of them for quotes.

I hope this is helpful.

May I also back up Rosen's recommendation as I have worked with Olivia Wood as well and found her to be very good. Thorough and prompt.
