Books disappear when I deregister

I have bought a KF from the US as a gift for a friend and I would like to download a couple of books from my amazon account to get her started. However, after downloading the books to the device, when I deregister the books disappear.

I know this is not a problem for a normal kindle and wondered if there was a way round it on the fire?

Thanks in anticipation.

This *is* how it is supposed to work. The books are sold to the buyer, not the device.

Maybe someone else knows whether this would work if you bought non-DRM books - e.g. from SmashWords? (Although it would still be strictly speaking illegal to do so.)

When has 'supposed to work' ever stopped people?

Would pass on a read book to a friend so why not an ebook?

Er... please don't shoot the messenger!

And if you are looking for someone to tell you how to crack the DRM, you've come to the wrong place.

What's a DRM??

Don't want to crack anything - certainly not this shiny new kindle!

Just wondered if there was a setting I'd missed.
