Where to next for the Kindle?

With so many rumours around regarding the Kindle Fire and even perhaps a Kindle Phone, were does that leave the original and best Kindle device - the e-ink Kindle.

Are we going to see any updated hardware this year do you think?

What features or improvements would it take for you to upgrade to a new model?

If they re-enabled 3G web browsing, I'd by a premium, top-of-the-range touch tomorrow.

For me it's not about convergence or having 3G web browsing on a device for reading books. IMO there is no further upgrades that you could put on a kindle to make me tempted to upgrade from my K4. Of I want to browse the web then I will use a computer or the iPad. Not even a backlight... Wink

It is all about the roaming charges - the K has been, if not a life-saver, then certainly a sanity-saver on sooooo many trips to Europe and beyond, where the spectre of roaming charges looms large.

How about a higher density screen so the fonts are sharper still? Something like e-ink retina.

Actually, following on from that, a whiter background would be nice.

A backlight would be nice indeed.

Although for me the web browser is a secondary bonus and I hardly ever use it, I think an improved browser would be a bonus. When I was in France, trying to hook up to good old MacDonald's free wireless - managed to do it fine on the phone - but the kindle would just not do it. I think it is because in order to use the free Wifi you have to go to a web browser and register, and it was just too much for poor little kindle to understand

I would like to be able to categorise my books into sub-categories within categories and to be able to add something to the title to indicate where a book comes within a series.

Better contrast, flexible screen, touch screen & page turn buttons.

I've read about HD e-ink but don't really see the point, better contrast with a whiter screen should be as good as it needs to get. Then again, I'm not one of those who wants to be able to browse the web on an e-reader, if I wanted something to do a lot of different things, I'd buy a tablet!

Having a flexible screen would be a big advance, e-readers seem far too fragile right now. I'm not fussed about lighting, but can see the attraction of front-lit readers. That apart, anything else is just software related, progress bar with chapter markings, better library management, nothing major.

RE: Where to next for the Kindle?

I've got a Kindle 3 so easier library management would be nice. And a flexible screen.

My eye sight isn't great and I'm not good with white backgrounds, so perhaps an adjustable one would be nice.
