What I Read

Child safe

I have just bought a Kindle,a basic model only this week.I have bought up to now 7 books.5 are for me and the other 2 are for my young daughter.

Is there a way to stop her from seeing my books.I have created two collections, one for me which has my books and one for her but we can still read each others books.I would like to safeguard my collection from her,as i read horror novels i do not wish her to see.

I know there is a password function on the Kindle but unless i am mistaken it is only to secure the whole Kindle and not collections.Or have i missed something?

Thanks in advance.Dave.

RE: Child safe

I think you're out of luck there. Simplest way is to get her her own Kindle.

Even if your daughter were to have her own Kindle, unless she had her own Amazon account to go with it, the books will still be able to be shared between the two. All the books you've bought from Amazon will be listed in the Archive, viewable on any Kindle linked to your account.

If your daughter learns how to do it, it'll be very easy for her to simply click on a book title in the archive and download it to her Kindle. Very easy because that's exactly what the archive is there for (it's all your books stored in the Amazon cloud, readily available for you to re-download to your Kindle whenever you wish).

Short of her having her own Amazon account (not ideal), the only way round it would be for you to back-up copies of your books on your own PC and delete them from your Amazon account so they are no longer available to re-download via the archive.

What I Read

RE: Child safe

I wonder if there's an argument nowadays for instilling "childsafe" strategies within children themselves nowadays because there seem to be easy ways for kids to see or read something utterly inappropriate. Porn, for example.

When I was a kid I was warned not to get into a stranger's car or accept sweets. Stood me in good stead. Nowadays the risks are higher and all-pervasive. Kids don't understand how devious predators can be... they are too naive and believe that someone who says they are 12 and a fan of Pokemon is indeed 12, etc.

If you explain to your daughter that she could read them if she wanted to, but if she did they might upset her far worse than whatever your most traqumatic happening to date had been (death of pet rabbit, perhaps?) then it removes the mystique and arms her against violations of not just adult material on your Kindle, but adult material anywhere.

I don't know what's for the best. It's very tough nowadays.

It is tricky i agree. But as she is only ten years old i need to her protect the best that i can from unsavoury books, including what she sees on the web.
I dont have any sex on the Kindle apart what is written within the books i read,as i said it is mainly the horror genre i enjoy but even that can be upsetting to young children.

Hmm, nice stories for a 10-year-old girl, does she like fairies, or maybe a unicorn?
