I'll start, as I have been waiting for me to open this thread Big Grin

I was pretty sure I was going to like this book, as I had read Steve’s first book, In the Blood, and enjoyed it, but I was not expecting to absolutely love it! What an amazingly well written book. Jefferson Tayte has developed into a great character, full of human frailty and is very likeable and real. The tragic story of Mena is woven incredibly well into JT’s search for her and could easily have been a stand-alone story, but the present and the past work well and link together seamlessly without confusion. I also liked the fact that Mena’s story was set not too far in the past and it was therefore easy to empathise with her and to be shocked by her circumstances. I imagine a lot of careful research must have gone into it. A sign of a great book for me is when I care for the characters and feel they are part of my world and that was certainly true of the people who inhabit To the Grave. Even the minor players were well drawn and three-dimensional.

I’m very excited for Steve. This second book is a leap on from his first and it is storytelling at its best in my view.

I truly could not put this one down.
What, made even more gripping/unnerving, is that Mena's story, probably did actually happen to young girl's at this time.
I found the book, very well written and researched.
Steve is clearly a very talented author and I can, wait for his next book to come out?
The book has made a big impression on me.
Can't recommend it highly enough..

I've only just started it, but I like that there's a few chapters in the now and a few chapters in the past and not one for one. You get a nice juicy chunk each time rather than rapid chopping and changing.

Please put a bowl of water out for hedgehogs and other night-time visitors, you might just save their life.
While you are at it, feed the birds too. Thumbs Up

And come and talk about it at Garden Wildlife Forum

Unfortunately, it is that swapping between the 'then' and the 'now' that spoils it for me. I've read both of the Jefferson Tayte stories and love the premise of genealogical mysteries so I feel rather frustrated that I don't enjoy them as much as I'd hoped.

Having said that, the books are well written and researched and I'm not sure how else they could have been plotted so that the reader gets the full story, as it were.

I've really enjoyed both books, and I like the swapping between then and now, although it's a difficult thing to do properly. I like the careful way Steve writes and plots - you get the feeling you're in safe hands! The only thing I didn't find entirely convincing was to do with motivation - had better go into spoiler mode here if I can manage it...

Whilst I enjoyed this book it didn't grip me. I didn't particularly like the use of the assassin, especially the "James Bond" bit of "Head or Heart, I'm going to keep asking you this until you escape my wicked clutches rather than just kill you like a normal assassin would do"

I thought the use of this in the prologue was great, it immediately hooked me in. Of course, in "real life", he would have just shot him without asking questions first, but then the story would have been over before it started!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I agree that the James Bond type assassin was unnecessary but found the story of Mena enthralling. I haven't read the first book but did not feel i was missing anything from the story. I look forward to reading more of this character.
