Shop at International Kindle Store?

I originally bought my Kindle from the US before they were available in the UK and bought all my books from .com in dollars. Then, when the Kindle became available from .co.uk, I switched my Kindle account to the UK. At that point I was able to move between .co.uk and .com - which I did when I wanted a book specifically from the US Amazon site - but somewhere along the line Amazon stopped allowing me to do this. But when I now look on "Manage Your Kindle" under "Country Settings" it says "Shop at International Kindle Store" - Is it again possible to choose to buy books from .com? And does anyone know if we can switch freely between the two?

I'm not 100% sure on switching between the .com & .uk website, but ebooks sales are limited by geographical rights, which is why if you are registered as a uk user, you get a message to visit the uk store when browsing Kindle books on the .com site.

RE: Shop at International Kindle Store?

I live in Australia and bought my kindle from Amazon US. Joined up here, registered to receive free book notifications etc.
The first day I got my email with the book list I found one that I liked, tried to download it and was told that I wasn't allowed to download it from the UK site to Australia, so now some poor author has lost a chance for me to sample their style and possibly become a buyer. I promptly deregistered from notifications.

If they are trying to control who buys what from whom, then they are pathetically naive about the realities of the internet.

It seems that if you don´t have an Amazon in your own country, your only choice is to buy e-books via Amazon.com. But we are ´allowed´ to buy paper books in the UK as well.

Bill, if you click on a link for amazon.co.uk you can then edit the link from .co.uk to .com . The rest of the url is the same and should then take you to the same book available to you in Australia (who buy from .com) providing it is for sale in that country.

The email should be useful to you, but you do have to "transate" it, as it were. Hope this helps

Hi Bill,

Yes, if you go to http://www.dailyfreebooks.com and sign up there with your email address, you'll get the same style mailer but with Amazon.com links and books. If you need to cancel your UK emailer, just follow the link at the very bottom of the email and hit cancel.

It's not about trying to control or limit who buys what, it's down to publishing rights. The publisher of a book being sold on Amazon.com doesn't necessarily have the right to publish that book in Australia or the UK, therefore Amazon or any other online store can't sell those books to people from those countries.

It is in fact worse than that. If I (who do not live in the UK) go on holiday to the UK, I can go into any bookshop there and purchase any book available. However, if I take my Kindle with me to the UK I CANNOT purchase an eBook from the UK Kindle bookstore.
Similarly, someone in the UK can buy a book for me as a present and send it to me, but they cannot do the same with an eBook.

..and publishers wonder why people resort to pirating ebooks?

RE: Shop at International Kindle Store?

Great topic and I agree with you maxicchars about being able to buy a book in another country. All this publishing rights stuff is ridiculous as to me it is stifling a market that is waiting to purchase ebooks or books from anywhere. After visiting USA recently on holiday I visited Barnes and Noble and checked out the Nook as I was interested in getting one for my daughter. They do not sell to anyone in the UK - it seems you have to have a USA registered address and USA registered credit card. I did ask about this in store and they gave me the same old waffle about publishing rights, VAT etc. I was advised to email their customer services once I got home which I did and it was the same info as I have just written. To me its a case of cutting off their nose to spite their face in not selling their wares to the rest of the world. Mind you I cannot say that I was impressed with the Nook with Glowlight - more than happy with my kindle touch.
One day free markets will be available again.
