transfering books

I have just been given a kindle touch , prior to this i had a bog standard e-reader , is it possible to transfer my books that i downloaded from kobo etc to my touch? or am i restricted to just ordering books via amazon? thanks

It depends whether (or not) the books have 'DRM', which is technology to explicitly prevent you from doing this.

If they do NOT have DRM, then you can use a piece of software called Calibre, which you download onto your PC, to convert them from '.epub' (for "other" readers) to '.mobi' (for Kindle).

(If they *do* have DRM, you can actually still do this, but it is not legal and it is a bit more difficult.)
