What I Read

New author and reader joining the boards!

Hi, I'm Alex, new to the forums! I've joined because I have recently made the (difficult but obvious) decision to go down the independent electronic self-publishing route to get my books out there. I have been working on a series for five years now. After two false starts, I currently have a completed manuscript to my name and the beginnings of a second book which I hope will be more meaningful than the first. Stretching back behind these projects is a long line of abandoned novels dating to about 1998 ... so you can see I've been trying to get published for a long time!

Also a voracious reader, most inspired by historical fiction. I'm obsessed with the nineteenth century and have studied it passionately for many years now. My other great love of mountaineering has led me to a natural harmony of these subjects: an interest in the climbers of the 19th century. This fascinating topic is the subject of most of my research (and books). I'm looking to discover as much new historical fiction as possible, but not just set in the 1800s--my interests are very broad.

I have also been blogging pretty much from the start, and my current blog (http://alexroddie.blogspot.com/) is slowly growing but failing to gain much readership. Hence one reason why I'm here =)

RE: New author and reader joining the boards!

Hi Alex,

I believe most who have made the self-publishing move have no regrets. Personally, it was the best decision I ever made in the publishing world.

Good luck and I'm sure you'll find any help you need with the friendly people in this forum.

Thanks for the welcome! This is certainly the impression I've been getting too ... my preconceptions about self-publishing all seem to be years out of date!

What I Read

RE: New author and reader joining the boards!

Hi Alex, I was published by a traditional publisher (mind/body/spirit) a decade ago. Getting a first novel published is a different matter. I had a lot of interest (including requests for the full manuscript from agents) but no takers with my fiction. Both my novels are on Kindle now: one has been selling a moderate trickle but the other has been doing well enough for me to pay off my credit card and have the money for my new harp plus some over. I don't regret going Indie - I'm getting to keep a lot more money than i did with my paper books, plus I'm the boss. If my books sold hundreds of thousands (wouldn't that be grand!) I'm not sure I'd want a publishing deal now. The giants are having to sell established, bestselling authors' work for pennies to compete with the success of indies. I say go for it and don't look back.
