I agree that real life is a mix of light/dark, good/bad, but some writers do choose to portray an unrelieved, bleak landscape - either to make a point or just because they only see the bad. That's fine, but I wouldn't want to read such books. I tried to read Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge recently, and it was beautifully written, but I found it just too depressing to want to continue.* That's what I felt reading the sample of CV - oh, they sound like a miserable, depressing bunch, I don't want to read on. But I can't say what the rest of the book is like; maybe there are some bright spots, but I didn't want to spend £11.99 on the off-chance.* I never found much to be cheerful about in Wuthering Heights either, but I loved it for the passion and drama.
