Not connecting to free wi-fi.

I took my kindle on holiday expecting to be able to connect to the free wi-fi that was available at the hotel and other places in the resort. Everytine I tried to connect I got an 'Unable to connect. Do you want to try manual settings?' As I didn't know the settings I couldn't connect that way!

According to the user quide all I need to do is click 'connect' and away you go.

Any ideas why this is not working as described?

Well after 136 views I was hoping that someone would have responded. I know that there is not a lot of activity but someone must have a response.

What I Read

RE: Not connecting to free wi-fi.

This is probably the wi-fi's fault, rather than the Kindle's.

I will try to explain!

When wi-fi was invented, the folks who invented it accounted for two scenarios - free, open networks; and closed, private networks.

They didn't account properly for the in-between case, where the hotel wants to allow you to use the network for free, but they also want to know who you are, so that if you do something illegal it can be traced back to you.

So, what happened is that subsequently, the people who made the wi-fi boxes had to hack-in methods of doing this. And sometimes, these methods are not very well tested, especially for hardware with quite limited capabilities like the Kindle.

So the problem you experienced is probably that the wi-fi box sent a non-standard message to your Kindle during the connection process (probably a request to bring up a browser window with a login for, where you enter your room number) and the Kindle didn't understand this, and assumed the connection was just dead.

PS - My answer probably also explains why no one else felt qualified to answer the question!

That was pretty much the way my phone was connecting to the freebie wifi networks in France a few weeks ago. Even in MacDonalds I had to register before I could use their free wifi, which now you explain it, is probably a little bit too complicated for the kindle to handle.

Well explained J.S.Egan! Perhaps if you are away on holiday in future you could try asking the hotel about any settings as it may well have been fairly straight forward to connect your Kindle by tweaking something in the manual settings?
