Big Grin I just couldn't help myself

Just posted this in reply to a question on another group. Did I get too clever for myself with the final comment?

Question was: Have you ever killed a character in your novel?

Yes, well at least I'm planning to. In one series the protagonist is hiding a terrible secret from their partner. This will only be revealed to that partner at the moment of their imminent demise, and hopefully be even more shocking because of that.

In my other series I've already killed off half a dozen people before 10K words in book 2, and hopefully the readers will engage with the most tragic character before her harrowing demise. Honestly I've not set out to shock, but to underline the many dangers facing the heroine, Janine, on her quest.

Maybe I should brand myself as a two times serial killer ;-)

Yes but when you are killing them off, do you secretly picture them as someone who you really don't like in real life, like an old school teacher, boss or Jeremy Clarkson?

Hi Elaine, no most of them go in a sympathetic way (I hope). Terrible things happening to good people, and hopefully the readers will realise the terrible dangers facing the protagonists.

Well it looks like I'm sticking my neck out here but I rather like Jeremy Clarkson **ducks to avoid flying rotten fruit** I think he's got a cheeky kind of humor about him that I like.

Having said that I'll also confess that I, too am a serial killer but I think you sometimes have to kill certain characters off, even or maybe especially, main characters just to increase the tension in your novels. Obviously it depends on what kind of work you do but killing off characters has never bothered me. Shy
