This booked had me hooked from the beginning. A real whodunnit that keeps you guessing to the end.
Really well written and a great insight to the world of scene of crime forensics.
The sort of book that kept me saying "i'll just read one more chapter" til way past my bedtime.
I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

This book is an exciting and complex tale about a SOCO working towards a promotion. He has problems at home and further problems with work colleagues, one of whom he is convinced has been dealing in guns. The story unfolds and with it the richness of the characters and their interactions with one another. There are two murders in the story and we are rather misled as to the perpetrator (as were the police!)

The language used throughout the book is really well thought out, descriptive and inspiring. I very much enjoyed it. The author is in this line of work himself and writes with authority. I loved the way the story built gradually and I thought I knew who was to blame but of course, I didn't! The ending is almost a cliff-hanger and although I have started another book, I know I shall very soon read Book 2. The man has a story-telling talent and I love to find another good author!

I normally steer clear of crime novels because I am actually in the Forensic field, so it can be somewhat of a busmans holiday to read books on crime scenes.

This book was recommended to me and I have to say that it is a very good read. Having worked in many many murder investigations I can honestly say that although a fictional depiction, it is totally technically correct and is what happens during a live investigation.

If I had to find 1 negative it would be that I lost track a couple of times of the characters, purely because theree were quite a few, but that is more a reflection on my brain than the style of writing.

If you want to know what it is REALLY like to be a CSI or SOCO in the UK then read this book and enjoy the twists and turns!

RE: A Long Time Dead (The Dead Trilogy)

Hi everyone,

I'd like to invite you all to plunder Amazon mercilessly and take home as many free copies of A Long Time Dead as you can cram into your shopping baskets between 18th and 22nd July.

If you have a 'thing' for crime and thriller reading, I'm sure you will enjoy this. It's the first in a short series featuring crime scene examiner, Roger Conniston - written by me, a crime scene examiner.

Here's what they're saying about A Long Time Dead:

RE: A Long Time Dead (The Dead Trilogy)

Today A Long Time Dead reached number 10 in the top 100 freebies, so I'm very happy.

Here's another interesting review, this one by Bookie:

As real as it gets. 15 July 2012

Mr Barrett may just be onto a winner here; a first novel by a writer with real talent. The author has brought to life his knowledge and experience in scenes of crime work. Many aspiring authors with an interesting line of work can't write well. Mr Barrett has an excellent ear for dialogue. He captures the reality of day to day conversation, but without making it sound dull and banal. He brings a dark humour to some of the exchanges; the kind of humour that many involved in the darker and more distressing side of life need to fall back on to remain sane. The central character is human with a back story that's interesting but not all pervading. He's someone most readers will understand. So characterisation is good and put all of this with a plot which will hold you right the way through and this makes a gripping, highly charged and well paced read. It's a first class procedural, with the SOCO side of the story being absolutely spot on. The plot turns when least expected a number of times and it keeps you guessing. Enjoyed this very much and Mr Barrett is on my list of must read writers. Looking forward to the next one.
