A review from Top 500 Amazon Reviewer and Vine Voice, C. Bannister this morning has reminded me that there have been a few recently that I've not posted.

I really enjoyed In the Blood: A Genealogical Crime Mystery #1 (Jefferson Tayte) but this one was even better.
Our American Genealogist Jefferson Tayte aka JT has been employed by Eliza Gray who has received a suitcase with some effects telling her that she was in fact adopted. JT travels to Leicestershire to discover who the mysterious Mena Lasseter was. The story of Mena is based towards the end of the war in 1944/45 but the current day story has just as much, if not more to offer.
The characters are well drawn and Mena's story is an emotional one but at the same time there is a lot of intrigue in the present day. JT finds himself in danger but who wants to cover up what happened all those years ago.
This is a stand alone story however I would suggest reading Steve Robinson's previous book first In the Blood: A Genealogical Crime Mystery #1 (Jefferson Tayte). As before the genealogical angle is covered accurately but not laboriously so it only serves to enhance the story not get in the way of it.
This emotional, thrilling tale thoroughly deserves 5 stars, I can't wait for the next one.

In The Blood is a fantastic book that fully deserves the praise and 5 star ratings. To The Grave is even better. Mena's story pulls at the heart-strings, which leads to tragic circumstances that are truly heartbreaking. I look forward to reading many more stories involving JT.

I read Steve Robinson's first book last week and enjoyed it so much I went straight for his second novel. Again, it is well researched and moves effortlessly between different periods in time, providing a real picture in the mind of what is happening in the story. I haven't been able to put it down and can't wait for another in the series!

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to review my books. It's very much appreciated. Smile

Now this one's special. I'll avoid the usual cliches, suffice to say it now occupies a spot in my top 5 Kindle reads since getting the device two years ago. I enjoyed the first Jefferson Tayte outing In the Blood: A Genealogical Crime Mystery #1 (Jefferson Tayte) so I was really pleased when this one appeared. I thought it would be a 'safe' read but I certainly wasn't prepared for just how compulsive it would become. I'm normally a disciplined reader, only allowing measured time slots at certain times of the day. But all that went out of the window and several bleary-eyed days followed! Nuff said?

Once again Steve Robinson has written a book that one cannot put down. From the first page to the last it was a gripping story with all the ingredients of a good read. I am looking forward to his next one.

I very much enjoyed reading 'To the Grave' (as I had expected to, after reading 'In the Blood'). The interwoven historical and contemporary stories worked well together, and the book was well written - I actually took longer than I thought I would to read it, because I didn't want it to come to an end too soon.

I always enjoy when I find a series that I like, it is great to start the first book and see how the character develops and to become familiar with his or her quirks and personality.
I think this book is better than the first - perhaps because I really enjoyed how the details of England in WWII were woven into the story, and how it linked to many other things I've read about the period, society, morals and the consequences of choices and mistakes.
You know as you start to read that things are going to go badly for some of the characters - but the exact details of how that happens still come as a surprise.
A good read, - the combination of mystery and historical research work very well together, and the use of different voices from the past adds depth and credibility to the characters.
Looking forward to the next one!

I thought this recent review of To the Grave on Amazon UK was too nice not to share it, particularly the bit about Mena who will always be a special character to me.

Yet another excellent Jefferson Tayte genealogical mystery... with the location in Leicestershire this time. It is a real `page-turner' and I found it difficult to put down in order to get on with the mundane details of my daily life.
Historical details from World War II are seamlessly a part of the `flash backs' and Steve Robinson includes snippets of genealogical research that will probably be useful to anyone starting out in researching their family history.

However, his portrayal of the young Mena is wonderfully sensitive, empathic and delightful. Her innocence and relationships with her family and friends is/are believable and the reader grows to love her even more through her difficulties and I found I cared very much about what was happening to her. I felt Tayte's frustration at being thwarted in his quest and found myself hating one or two of the characters... yes, I was totally absorbed!

The ease with which Steve Robinson moves from the past to the present is excellent and the twists and turns of the plot were predictable... until I found that they weren't!

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book whether one is interested in genealogy or not... and with Steve Robinson's skills as a writer clearly shining out I'm looking forward to more of the loveable Jefferson Tayte.

Having looked at the other reviews on this site about this book, there is not much more I can add. A great book. I did read book one first but they are stand alone and totally different. Again like his first Jefferson Tayte book, you do keep guessing until the last few chapters when you are willing a happy ending. Was it a happy ending? Well you will just have to read it yourself and find out. Personally I can't wait for book number 3 to come out.

Having loved Steve's debut Jefferson Tayte novel In The Blood, I was itching to move on to this, the second in the series. Tayte the character has already become established in my mind and was soon back in England researching for another American client. This story, in my opinion, differs a lot from In The Blood. It feels far more emotional and knowing that there is some background to this story in Steve Robinson's own history, this does make sense. It's so poignant - a story of misunderstanding, wrong acts and lifetimes of regret.

There's a similar dual time line to In The Blood, taking us through the plot both in the present day and back in wartime England. It's obvious Steve did a lot of research into that intense period, getting the mood and the language just right and bringing to life the cocktail of young GIs off to war and the relative peace of rural England.

Of course it wouldn't be Jefferson Tayte without some danger and he again finds himself dealing with that. The book also highlights some of the genealogical brick walls we often face in our research, especially when steps are taken to hide people away.

I finished the book last night and was left with a real sense of sadness for how lives were taken away. I think I did prefer this book to the first but it's hard to choose. Another excellent story I found hard to put down.

My second book, To the Grave, has just received it's 100th review on Amazon UK. It's not as many as .com by a fair bit, but it's a significant milestone so I thought I share it, especially as it's maintained a very high average rating of 4.9 out of 5.0 stars, which still amazes me.

Eagerly awaiting more books.
