What I Read

RE: Kill the Kindle!

I'd like to add that the kindle has been a Godsend to me too Sujay as I have RA and my hands can't hold paper books for very long at all now, I can read much longer into the night with my kindle thank I could before.
Also in reply to Daphne, I first heard about the kindle in my RA support group where one of my members extolled its virtures. Now more than several of us have bought them and totally love them and we are always recommending good books to each other. More sales for the authors and plenty of kindle diehard fans to keep Amazon in business!! Those people who dismiss them don't know what they're missing!!

And there is the issue of space. I've got too many books, every time I move flat I have to keep having a cull and getting rid of them. I simply can't afford the space for rows and rows of book shelves. Having the kindle means that I can keep on reading as much as I do and I have a slim portable device to keep them on, and a tidier flat!

I read that a few days ago - how ridiculous. While I can appreciate the tough time independent books are facing, vilifying an agent of change isn't going to help!

RE: Kill the Kindle!

To be fair, it must be tough times for independent book stores what with the recession as well. It would be a shame if we were to lose them because of the kindle, but sadly that's the cost of progress. I got to thinking about this the other night watching a programme showing teenagers rifling through the records in Our Price and there's no doubt for me that the digital age has taken a lot of fun out of buying music and also books.

What retailers need to do is find a way to embrace the technology - perhaps like a digital showroom with display copies of real books and also a digital transfer process at the till so people can still buy in e shop and have their book waiting for them when they get home. Obviously it's not as black and white as that, but people do still love to browse in a more physical sense.

I think unless retailers come up with something soon, high streets are going to become ghost towns with noting left but Tesco, pound stores and mobile phone shops.

What I Read

RE: Kill the Kindle!

I love Hay-on-Wye and i love my kindle too, i like both for different reasons- Hay tends to have masses and masses of second hand books which would never make it into digital form- many old textbooks, texts which have numerous colour pictures etc.. They just would not be able to make the digital conversion.

And i wouldn't expect many of the new kindle formatted e-books to ever make it into print- not the best sellers obviously, but the new indie authors texts.

I have often been asked about my kindle, and how it works, what im reading etc., people show a lot more interest in what you are reading on a kindle compared to being interested in the paperback you are reading- i too reckoni have recruited quite a few new customers for Amazon- even my GP asked about my kindle when i went into my appointment holding it- asked me about it and the next time i visited said she had brought one for her son!

I believe the kindle complements peoples reading habits- like i said in my first paragraph there are some books which could never make the digital conversion, and there will always be a market for books such as these.
