It's not a con job. It must be a special offers Kindle bought in the US, as they are the only Kindles that have ads on them. And they don't have banner ads across every page, on the menu pages and when the screensaver comes on, they don't display when you are reading a book.

Anyway, the fact is the special offers Kindle costs $40 less than the regular Kindle, and therefore costs $40 to have Amazon remove the 'special offers' from it.

I can assure you that she didn't buy it from the US.

Well in that case take it back to where she bought it from and demand a refund.

The only Kindles that display ads are the special offers Kindles. Look at the Kindles page on the US Amazon website and you'll see the different prices: http://www.amazon.com/kindle

They aren't sold in the UK and there is something wrong if you've got one that is displaying ads when you've bought it in the UK.

What I Read

RE: New Touch - No "Device Options"?

That's sounds really, really odd..

I have a relative with a US bought kindle, and is one of the ad-supported ones, yet it doesn't show ad's at all whilst your are reading, certainly not on the bottom of every page- I'd get it checked- it does sound completely weird!

+ 1 on the agreeing front.

UK bought items shouldnt have Ads.

I actually have the US Ad supported version and the only ads I ever see are are small band at the very bottom of the home page and when the unit is off or on standby, there is an ad on the screen which doesnt affect reading as the moment you power it up, they dissappear. I certainly dont get anything popping up at the start of the book or mid read ( although some books have their own built in adverts for other books ?? )

Also, what did the ads say ? Mine was brought over for me by a relative after it was purchased in Boston US. All i ever get ad-wise are ads for offers in and around Boston so they are pretty geographical in their targeting ( This may have given you some clues ? )

Good luck either way,

Tone

What I Read

RE: New Touch - No "Device Options"?

I was thinking about this post whilst i was working earlier on (i was bored!) and the only thing i can possibly imagine could have happened was that someone has had a fiddle round with the kindle os (rooted it) and somehow some malicious software has made it's way onto it made by some company/person and it's displaying ad's from the person/company who rooted it..

I don't know how likely this is at all, but it would be worth giving amazon a ring and reporting it.

Let us know what happens!

Yes please post back an update. Be interesting to know where it was bought from and what Amazon would do if you had a receipt to show it was bought new somewhere.
