RE: Film adaptations that surpass the books...

I adore Ian McEwan's Atonement, and the film came very very close to matching my enjoyment of the book.

Aw, I'm glad this thread is still going. And I actually just watched 'The Social Network' the other night. It's a very good film.

As it's nearly Christmas (and I know it's not better than the book) but you have to love A Muppet Christmas Carol. Charley Dicks would have loved it, I'm sure.

I thought the old b & w Great Expectations was loads better than the book. And the film-musical version of Oliver as well.

I completely agree - the Muppet version is by far the best adaptation as far as I'm concerned. Who could be better than Robin as Tiny Tim?

My 13 year old son has just started on Great Expectations at school. It is the first Charles Dickens he has ever read and the weird thing is I haven't heard any complaints yet.

I also agree with LOTRO, I do sometimes find it hard to understand how highly regarded the books are because if you actually sit there and read them they are quite a chore to get through because the actual way they are written is not at all readbale.

The Graduate is a good example. I didn't read it, but I did read a sequel (sorry, I don't recall the title) by the same author and found it quite ordinary. The film, of course is a brilliant classic.

I think the Graduate sequel was called 'Home School', Bob.
