The Winnowing

Hello All,

I'm a shiny, brand new boy, but I'm still going to do a bit of self-promotion- thought you might like to know that The Winnowing by Chris Fyles is now on Kindle. It's currently in the Lending Library, but is otherwise a very reasonable £0.77. Here's the blurb:

“The things come from within and change us and make us theirs...”

Richard Brot is a believer in Right and Wrong, a product of his parents’ religion. A stranger living among strangers in a hostile city, he is repressed, lonely, and addicted to drink. After a drunken encounter with a prostitute, he relives the journey that brought him to this dark place.

Richard, as his younger self, is a schoolboy in North West England, bullied and confused, his beliefs under attack from his desires. He stumbles upon a tortured cat on his way to school, a love-making couple on a golf course and, in himself, a disturbing fascination with violence, along with the stirrings of anger at the moral decay in those around him.

In this seething state, he meets and falls in lust with his mother’s friend, Laurie: his certainty unravels and he descends into a violent fantasy world. Drifting among thugs and racists and in thrall to Laurie’s sexual teasing, when real courage is needed, he cannot provide it. Bereft of the power to act on his beliefs or his desires, his mind begins to disintegrate, as he heads towards a devastating climax.

Reviews from elsewhere:

"I loved this intense and powerful book. The author masterfully weaves the tale...This isn't a light read, but definitely worth reading!" (paulat35)

"...Quite unique and not the type of book I have read before...I had trouble putting down my reader as the story kept my attention from start to finish." (NicoleLeon)
