David, have you ever watched the series "the pretender"? Well I think that's what it's called in English, not seen it for a very long time.... Imdb linkie here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115320/

Nope, I can't say I've ever heard of 'The Pretender' - I hope it's better viewing than the summary makes it sound! Big Grin

I know there are quite a few books, movies and TV shows out there that cover similar ground to Bang, which is not a surprise, as no story is 100% original. What's more, during my research I discovered that the world of detective agencies and honeytrap organisations is very real indeed! In Japan, of course, they've turned it into an entire industry - there's a mention in Bang of the wakaresaseya (breaker-uppers) who are the Japanese equivalent of relationship assassins.

But it happens in the UK too. Joo pointed me towards this news article a while back which is almost too close for comfort!

Haha, teenage crushes can be forgiven anything! Hmmm maybe this is why you were keen to sign up to be a relationship assassin! TongueBig Grin

RE: Bookclub: The Discussion of Bang: Memoirs of a Relationship Assassin (spoilers)

Hi David,
We've emailed on goodreads about this book and when I heard there was a discussion on it here I thought I'd pop over.
I actually disagree with the perception that this book is an 'easy read', or at least the assumption that it doesn't provoke thoughts. Reading through the posts on here there seem to be people who love it and people who don't, a little 'marmite' like. Well I didn't love the story, I liked your style of writing and found it flowed well. Its possibly this that leads to the assumption its easy reading. My experience of reading it was that it actually challenged my thinking.
Scott had a specific reaction to women, he had the confidence he could win over any woman and make her feel special for a while and was obviously very successful at this. The way in which he altered his identity was fascinating.I was particularly challenged by the concept of 'managing' sexuality, people and relationships in the way David (and Emma) did. Before reading the book I would in no way class myself as a romanticist... after reading it I know I am!

In writing about identities you challenged my perception around relationships and around my self perception. I also found myself thinking about this book long after I'd put it down and written a review. Thats got to be a good thing.

In short (Wink) its a well wrtten book I believe is only classed as easy reading because it flows so well. Perhaps the 'marmite' effect is testament to the way in which you challenge perceptions around the 'emotive' arena of relationships.....? Anyway, Wine1

I like the bit with Becky, when Scott tries to get her interested. It's reads a bit like a "guide to pulling"... I find it quite funny, but really... are we women that predictable lol ?

Kate, thanks very much for this... I know we chatted briefly before, but I remain amazed by your reaction to the book!

I have found that there are many inherent problems in writing a book about someone who deliberately ends other people's relationships. I've been told several times by potential readers that they would never want to read about such a person, and even been warned that nobody would. There is something about the whole relationship assassin idea that does produce this 'Marmite effect'!

Susanne 'disliked Scott intensely from the first page' - quite a strong and swift reaction! A few others have said something similar to me. And yet, I wonder if those readers have that reaction when reading a horror, thriller or suspense story which starts from the point of view of a killer/murderer/rapist. Oddly, reading about someone who ends other people's lives doesn't seem to be so much of a problem as someone who ends other people's relationships!

I suspect that, like yourself Kate, many people would not consider themselves to be especially romantic by nature, and yet react badly to the idea that a man could conceivably destroy a romance. I wonder why? Maybe we're all just romantic at heart?

RE: Bookclub: The Discussion of Bang: Memoirs of a Relationship Assassin (spoilers)

I must admit that I was a bit put off by the subject matter and only downloaded the book because it was free and had been recommended. So I approached reading it with trepidation. Although I felt very uncomfortable at times I did enjoy the book and gave it five stars when I reviewed it. If it wasn't for the fact that I'd seen people's recommendations and that it became a book club read, I might not have read it. Now I have I will be reading Fake Kate at some point soon (huge TBR list allowing..)

Now that's a really interesting point, David, and it has made me think about my strong reaction to the character.

I do read thrillers where the progatonist may be a killer/rapist/other abhorrent person, but it doesn't necessarily stop me enjoying the book and I think that because my own life is so far removed from the minds and lives of these characters, I have no way of identifying with them and so the story becomes a glimpse into the mind of an "alien" personality - I am revolted by their actions, but fascinated at the same time if the story is well written.

And here is the difference with the character in Bang - I have met men like that over the years - not relationship assassins - but posers and players who think they are God's gift - and my dislike of them meant that I didn't want to go near them again - even in a book! Interesting!
