And yet, I wonder if those readers have that reaction when reading a horror, thriller or suspense story which starts from the point of view of a killer/murderer/rapist. Oddly, reading about someone who ends other people's lives doesn't seem to be so much of a problem as someone who ends other people's relationships!
Now that's a really interesting point, David, and it has made me think about my strong reaction to the character.
I do read thrillers where the progatonist may be a killer/rapist/other abhorrent person, but it doesn't necessarily stop me enjoying the book and I think that because my own life is so far removed from the minds and lives of these characters, I have no way of identifying with them and so the story becomes a glimpse into the mind of an "alien" personality - I am revolted by their actions, but fascinated at the same time if the story is well written.
And here is the difference with the character in Bang - I have met men like that over the years - not relationship assassins - but posers and players who think they are God's gift - and my dislike of them meant that I didn't want to go near them again - even in a book! Interesting!
