RE: Bookclub: The Discussion of Bang: Memoirs of a Relationship Assassin (spoilers)

I hope I'm not breaking etiquette by commenting on the discussion of my own book, but I have to say THANK YOU to everyone for the wonderful comments so far! I know Bang is not an especially highbrow or literary work so I wondered if there was little to discuss. But it's so exciting to read about people who have enjoyed it! Thumbs Up

Lorraine - did you really cry? I want to say I'm sorry, but to be honest I'm just astonished that it got such a reaction!

I loved the bit where Scott goes to Emma's self defence class. I read that with a smile on my face Big Grin

And when they walked into Global Investigations, I pictured the girls as the Hot Chicks off Dude Where's My Car Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

Lol, no I didn't cry when she got the photos, I was thinking about when it all comes to a head at the end. Got confused lol ! But yeah I did cry then. Well OK not the catastrophic waterworks, but I was quite teary !

And the self-defence class scene is ACE... got me laughing out loud !

Pffff rollercoaster of emotions that book, I told you !

EDIT - got to re-read... getting confused... can't remember the moment when Emma sees the photos Sad

It's not Emma, it's Becky - unless you are on about another set of photos.

RE: Bookclub: The Discussion of Bang: Memoirs of a Relationship Assassin (spoilers)

There isn't any one inspiration for Emma. Obviously there are shades of Emma Peel from The Avengers (the Sixties TV show, not the superhero movie!), but actually the character of Emma is originally there to provide two types of contrast. Firstly, I wanted a classically beautiful and 'perfect' woman to contrast against Becky, who is more down to earth and girl-next-door. Secondly, when it's revealed she is a relationship assassin, her professionalism becomes a contrast against Scott's more seat-of-the-pants way of doing things!

Later on, I started wondering what makes Emma the way she is, and came up with some backstory for her. Unfortunately there wasn't really space to include it in the book, other than a couple of veiled references she makes to an unpleasant past. This is the problem with books written first-person - the reader only knows what the main character knows! But I'm hoping we'll get to discover more about her in Book 2.
