What I Read

Walled Gardens

Interesting article at GigaOm on how the e-book market is splitting into three (in the US at least) isolated walled gardens - How the e-book landscape is becoming a walled garden. This story has come back into focus after Apple banned a book from iTunes because it contained hyperlinks to books in the Amazon store.

To give them their due I think the Amazon garden is the most open; I read Kindle books on a Kindle, PC, Android tablet, phone and an iPod Touch and the transition from one to the other is seamless. The driver for Amazon seems to be to lock readers into their store front, whilst Apple seem more intent on the locking into the platform.

The Nook is the other big player in the States, but I'm not really sure how the Sony and Kobo platforms fit into the picture in the long term.

Cheers,

Jonathan
