Walled Gardens

Interesting article at GigaOm on how the e-book market is splitting into three (in the US at least) isolated walled gardens - How the e-book landscape is becoming a walled garden. This story has come back into focus after Apple banned a book from iTunes because it contained hyperlinks to books in the Amazon store.

To give them their due I think the Amazon garden is the most open; I read Kindle books on a Kindle, PC, Android tablet, phone and an iPod Touch and the transition from one to the other is seamless. The driver for Amazon seems to be to lock readers into their store front, whilst Apple seem more intent on the locking into the platform.

The Nook is the other big player in the States, but I'm not really sure how the Sony and Kobo platforms fit into the picture in the long term.

Cheers,

Jonathan

Nook is rapidly declining in the US.

... and its launch in the UK hasn't been very successful. It is not clear what the future of the Nook is at the moment. Consider:

  • B&N are selling the existing models at considerable price reductions - which are probably below cost
  • There has been no sign of a device using the new high resolution display that the Kobo Aura HD sports
  • In the last couple of days B&N have removed their PC and Mac reader apps from their site (Windows 8 app is still there)
  • They have updated their Android tablets to use the Google App store, effectively making them generic Android tablets.
This all feels like preparation to exit the market.

By the way, since writing the original post in this thread I've become a Nook and Kobo owner. I like the Kobo very much, but the Nook experience is ruined by their dreadful UK store.
