RE: Format shifting?

A few years ago we wanted to publish a new edition of a book for which we didn't have a digital file. It was out of print and all we had was the last remaining copy that the author owned - and she didn't want it destroyed.
We used a company called The Book Scan Bureau that has an advanced piece of kit that can scan print copies without destroying them - or even pressing them flat. The machine holds the book open at an angle of 110 degrees.
If they are still trading (can never be sure these days!) you'll find them at http://www.bookscanbureau.co.uk.
