Colour e-ink Kindle rumour

There is currently a rumour circulating that Amazon has put in an initial order for Triton e-ink screens from E-ink holdings for March with plans for increasing production to 3 million units a month thereafter. This coincides with rumours of a larger Kindle Fire unit being produced by Foxconn for the second quarter of 2012.

We took a look at the Triton e-ink display way back in September at which point the technology seemed already to be very robust. It would make perfect sense for Amazon to be planning a Kindle based on this technology particularly as it requires little or no change to form-factor.

Of course, should a colour e-ink device be released this year in the US, we can expect at least a six month time lag before we see anything land in the UK based on the reluctance to release the Kindle Touch here despite it now shipping internationally to the Democratic Republic of Congo...

RE: Colour e-ink Kindle rumour

I'm not interested in the Fire or the Touch but I would be very interested in a colour e-ink Kindle. It's good to know there are rumours circulating about it. Thanks Lou.

RE: Colour e-ink Kindle rumour

I really only use my Kindle to read book, so I'm not excited by the prospect of colour. Having said that, I have no doubt that once they arrive, I'll want one!

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Ken - although there are some work books that would be good in colour (and perhaps a comic or fifteen...).
I won't need a colour Kindle but circumstances will conspire to push me towards one. Even if I have to force the circumstances myself Smile

The rumours of a colour e-ink Kindle in the works seem pretty plausible to me. I'm not so sure about this rumour of an illuminated e-ink Kindle... Given the way that e-ink displays work I don't think a back-light is possible - however there are a number of front-light technologies that might be workable. It would be quite difficult to achieve consistent illumination across a screen the size of the Kindle's whilst keeping the thickness down.

Cheers,

Jonathan

UPDATE:

Slightly more information here and it is a front-light.

RE: Colour e-ink Kindle rumour

Barnes & Noble have just announced the Nook Simple Touch with built-in front-lighting. It uses a thin film lit by LEDs and laid over the e-Ink display. The brightness is adjustable and the e-Reader goes on sale on 1st May (in the States) for $40 more than the normal version of the Simple Touch. Details including photo at ars technica.

This is getting interesting!

Cheers,

Jonathan

RE: Colour e-ink Kindle rumour

Hi

I am never happy and always want to change.Blush

Yesterday I bought a US Kindle Fire on eBay and sold my regular Kindle. As the Kindle Fire has not arrived and my regular Kindle has been posted I spend a few hours reading vis the Kindle App on my iPad. I ended up with a headache which I guess came from looking at the iPad's screen for so long.

Thankfully as long as I don't open the Fire I can return it for a full refund and I think I am going to do that.

I wish I had of spent more time using the Kindle app on my iPad before I ordered the Fire. Its at least for me so much easier to read on an e-ink screen. A e-ink, colour, touch screen Kindle would be great.Thumbs Up
