Wink What are YOU doing to promote your free books? (This is what I'M doing!)

This post was last modified: 13 Feb 2012 06:46 PM by Tony James Slater.
Hi everyone!

I've got a couple of free days coming up on 15th & 16th Feb, as per KDP Select.
So.
I want to get the most out of the free downloads of course, to maximise visibility, and I'm sure I'm not alone - so I thought I'd start this thread to collect ideas about how best to promote our free books/days - and any sites/groups/newsletters we can use to help!

Here's my contribution first, and I'm really hoping some of you will chip in with information - we can make this a really useful resource for people if we all contribute!

(Feel free to stick the odd story of success in there to illustrate your tactics - or just to make us all feel good about our upcoming promotions!)

Obvious places that produce 'Free eBook round-ups' or newsletters:

Pixel Of Ink: http://www.pixelofink.com/sfkb/
Kindle Nation Daily: http://kindlenationdaily.com/contact-us/
Ereader News Today: http://ereadernewstoday.com/category/free-ebooks/
Indie Books List – They send out an email each day with freebies!
http://www.indiebookslist.com...
The Frugal eReader - They do some paid promos, but also feature regular freebies.
http://thefrugalereader.com/promotional-opportunities/
Bargain ebook Hunter - you can submit your free ebook through their site here: http://bargainebookhunter.com/feature-your-book/
(they also have a range of paid sponsorships, which I'm about to check out!)

And here's some Facebook groups I've found - many have guidelines on what and when you can post, so read 'em when you can find 'em - please don't SPAM them all or I'll get in trouble!

EDIT: Please do be extra careful in this - I've collected these links over a few months of 'liking' various eBook-based pages, but most of these pages' owners DO NOT WANT authors to stick random unsolicited promos all over their Walls - it would get in the way of what they are trying to do. So please, when using this list to visit Facebook Groups and Pages, take time to read all the available info and/or contact the page owner to find out if/how you can get your book featured with them.

RE: What are YOU doing to promote your free books? (This is what I'M doing!)

THIS IS A MESSAGE I'VE COPIED FROM ANOTHER THREAD:
(John Barlow has thoughtfully posted a link to his blog, where he outlines the promo he did for his free days. Very appropriate, and an excellent resource! Thanks John)

Hi. I've just done a summary of all the book bloggers and other sites that have helped me publicize my ebook so far:

http://www.johnbarlow.net/blog/#home

This is my first attempt at seek out my own publicity, and I am interested to know whether more experienced indies consider this to be a lot of exposure for six weeks' work (6 reviews, 9 guest blogs, 5 interviews, 11 excerpts/mentions)?

Also, does anyone have specific data or opinions as to what yields the best sales results? I'm not sure there are any tendencies from my own stuff, other than a blog post that garners a lot of attention doesn't seem to lead to any more sales than one which has no comments. Guest blogs are most work, and they do make you THINK that you're really pushing the book, but do they drive sales much?

Best wishes, JohnB

No worries Linda!
Another great place is the 'World Literary Cafe', (formerly the Woman's Literary Cafe).
They've got a great following - it was started by bestselling indie author Melissa Foster (of Chasing Amanda fame).
They try to get as many people as poss to schedule their books free on the 15th of the month, then put out a newsletter and post linking to all of them! Deffo worth a go, especially if you happen to be free on the 15th anyway - like I am!

Tony, thanks very much for sharing this. What a terrific resource! I'll be sure to check these out when it comes to my next promo day.

Here's a few Facebook pages I've used, and I think they've all resulted in some interest in my books:

http://www.facebook.com...
http://www.facebook.com/IndieBookBuys
http://www.facebook.com/iauthor

As you say, be careful to read the pages properly, but in all cases they are happy with authors posting their books as long as it's not a constant stream of spam!

Cheers David! Very helpful!
I'll get in touch with them tomorrow and put the details of any of them happy to promote, into the list for the future!
When it's done I'll come and post it here as well as on Facebook.
That way, next time we want to schedule a free day, it should be pretty easy to knock up a campaign.
Cheers!

RE: What are YOU doing to promote your free books? (This is what I'M doing!)

Hi folks.....

I thought that I would add my Facebook page to this list as I had started it up due to the fact that a lot of people who had Facebook pages were not happy to include links to other people's books.....

Everyone is welcome to add there books to the page as that is the reason for it's existence and the info page does include that everyone is welcome....(see about page below)

"Have you just published a kindle book and are looking for a way to get the word out there? Have you read a fantastic kindle book lately and want to recommend it so that others will read it?

Do you enjoy reading and would you like to post reviews?

Well look no further this page has it all covered!

Simply post the link to your website, books and tell us a bit about what you do or have written.

The rules, well those are simple, just post the link to let us all know about your kindle books whether you are an author, a publisher or have just read a great book lately!

Please note: neither myself nor any of the other admins are in the position to review any books written by others. Please do not ask as sometimes a refusal sounds offensive and that is certainly not the case, it's just that we simply do not have the time.

I hope that you understand....

Thank you."

This is the link to the Facebook page and everyone is welcome to use it for whatever reason..... Smile

RE: What are YOU doing to promote your free books? (This is what I'M doing!)

What a great thread! I am just waiting for B & N to take my books off their shelves and I will be enrolling in the KDP program. It will be at least 4 weeks before I do a free weekend but I am already looking for places to get the word out, and you guys have been so helpful.

If I come across another other sites that might be useful I will be back to share.

All the best,

Alan

What I Read

RE: What are YOU doing to promote your free books? (This is what I'M doing!)

I'd really like to thank Tony James Slater who started this thread. He blogged about his enormously successful KDP Select days, and I used many of the sites he named when my book Circle of Bones went free on March 10-12. My US sales have been amazing for the rest of this month (over 7,000 books) but I have sold all of 18 books in the UK.

I'm planning another giveaway weekend in May, and I'm trying to research sites that list free books in the UK. Any help will be hugely appreciated!
Fair winds!

Christine

This is a list of the sites that I have compiled that you can submit your free days to and they will possibly list if for you. It's a bit of a jumble, but the info is solid. Many of these sites can be accessed directly by http://authormarketingclub.com, which compiles a list of forms.
