What I Read

RE: What was your first book as an "adult"?

I think mine was The Day Of The Triffids, by John Wyndham, aged 10 or possibly 11. I was already a big sci-fi fan by that age and was worried at tackling such a 'huge' book, but stuck with it and hugely enjoyed it. So much so I went immediately to Chocky, another of Wyndham's classics. Even then I was loyal to my favourite authors!

Probably Lord of the rings trilogy. And although I love these books and have read them dozens of times, I still find them hard going.

RE: What was your first book as an "adult"?

My best friend's parents had Fanny Hill on their bookshelf. We must have been about 11-12 years old at the time and knew there were "naughty bits" in it, but could never find them, much as we tried! Big Grin

The Island of Dr Moreau by H G Wells. I was about eleven and it was terrifying. It was only much later that I realised I'd chosen the only genuine horror story that Wells wrote. I re-read it recently - and I still find it disturbing.

Talking of " naughty bits" I ploughed all the way through HMS Ulysees, waiting eagerly for them, duh....

What I Read

RE: What was your first book as an "adult"?

I remember reading Ian Fleming's The Spy Who Loved Me at 10 in the classroom at Primary School., when we were all told to get our books out of our desks and read for an hour. The teacher saw the book cover and came over to try to talk me into reading something else...I think she asked did my parents know I had the book, and when I said "yeah" she appeared to give up and go back to her desk (where she was reading something secret out of view)...
At 11 I remember trying to read Arthur C Clarke's 2001...but I wasn't quite "getting it" and it was a library book and when I got to the end the last 20 pages were missing...
The first adult book I "got" all the way down into my bone marrow, though, was aged 14, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...

Twas back in the old days when your parents kept you in bed for the slightest snuffle and there I was bored, in bed, with tonsillitis. I croaked a request to my Nana to bring me back some Superman.DC comics please. Back she came, no comics, but a thick Pan version of Jane Eyre. Major strop from yours truly "not reading that, writing too small,it'll be boring", she told me to suit myself and left me in my bedroom with book on bed. Out of pure boredom I picked it up and was totally entranced. I've got a paperback copy and now a kindle version of the book, but loathe to re-read it in case I don't enjoy it as much

I'm sure my first adult book (is that the same as book as an adult?) was something by Catherine Cookson, Barbara Michaels, or some historical romance writer from the seventies. I was always encouraged to read whatever was around, and those were the most likely suspects. Although, for the first couple years with the historical romances, pretty sure I only read the "good parts" -- does that count? Smile

I think I read Wuthering Heights at about thirteen, and Jane Eyre shortly after that. Maybe Gone with the Wind at 15, but the thing I recall most was crying so hard and having to take the day off from school.

Now, bearing in mind my grandmother was very traditionally minded, shall we say, when I think about it now, its quite strange that she was fascinated by a series of books that had the theme of incest running through them, and slightly strange that she passed them on to her 14 year old granddaughter. eg: my grandmother refused to watch anyone on TV who had been divorced, because she thought they were morally corrupt - so I guess she didn't really watch a lot of tv.

Hmmm, now I'm thinking my first adult book might have been Flowers. I don't think so though, but that was pretty early on. A whole generation got some strange impressions of suitable love interests. I do remember reading a pretty steamy scene from the sequel while on the bus to Catholic School. Cathy didn't know what the guy meant by "come" -- and neither did I.
