do most android apps work on the KF but you just cant access the apk files or they just dont work on the kind silk OS?

It's a mixed bag really. Assuming you can get the .apk files, a lot of things work fine as long as they don't use Google APIs in them as these are not on the Kindle Fire. The only thing is that the general quality of Android apps is all over the place with no standards, so sometimes they don't fit the screen properly because they were designed for a phone. The better quality apps look and work great though.
