What I Read

Trans Media - The Way Forward For Story Telling?

Interesting article in this morning's Click programme on BBC1 about Trans Media ...... the future of story telling (perhaps).

It's kinda like eBook meets Social Networking meets Location Based Live Gaming.

Basically a 'book' may be written in parts often with reader input and backed up by flashmob style reader participation via twitter feeds etc or reader participation in the video sections of the story which are imbedded in the 'book'. The book may spur a game version of itself and vice versa or the book may be the extension of a game character's back story. 'Seeding' (where characters may be created as pseudo facebook & twitter users) promotes the book and through this makes the reader/follower/participant experience multi-dimensional via interaction with characters in the book ..............

All sounds very exciting or very dull/stupid depending on your point of view

Is this the future of story telling?

We are working in an ever changing environment, activities that engage the end user, in this case the reader, are always worth considering. Not every new idea is for everyone but we should not be afraid to 'boldy go' as my favourite starship captain once said! Big Grin

I would hope it was part of the future rather than the only way. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

Just watched it, daveb.
Interesting to see that the author still reckons the story/book is 80% of it and all the extras are an added benefit.

Worth watching even if just to see how other concepts can help bring your book alive an engage the audience.

Indeed ..... I'd place myself in the 'interested' category. What I'd really like is a fully integrated & hyperlinked reading experience so that whatever I read in 'e' format would contain a plethora of relevant supporting / embedded / linked material.

This could be a link to the text of the famous 'I Have A Dream' speech and a video of the actual event when reading a bio of Martin Luther King ........ or a virtual gallery tour of 'the Complete Works Of' when reading the life & times of the Dutch painter Vermeer ........ or an opportunity to visit The Kings Head in Tollesbury and 'meet' the locals.

RC Bridgestock has recently posted a thread about readers taking part in the next novel here ........ I do like this kind of relationship between authors, publishers & readers.

I personally would have no interested in taking part myself but I can understand how younger people & enthusiasts (think 'Treckkies') would love this aspect. I once walked into (literally) a Flashmob Opera at Paddington station and the experience lives with me today .... amazingly different.

Interesting stuff. Unfortunately the only hardware that could support this at the mo have illuminated displays and I can't read these for long so I wouldn't like to loose the Kindle (and other similar readers) style reading experience Smile
