New User and KF Owner

Hi

Just thought Id introduce myself.

My name is Dave, Im from Liverpool and the proud Owner of a Kindle Fire, purchased on release date and given to me for Xmas.

I got mine through Amazon.com, but had it delivered to my friends Fiancee's house, who is from Minnesota, she brought it over for me the week before Xmas, so saved on all sorts of duty and tax. PHEW

Anyway, since getting it ive managed to root it (thanks to her US address) and have started adding apps whenever the mood has taken me.

I now have an audiobook reader which can be minimized and books can be read at the same time, which is great for the new Alan Partridge book.

Also using Calibre Ive managed to convert all teh walking dead comics from .cbr files to moby and they look great.

Anyway, hello and hopefully I can get involved in the forum.

btw I LOVE MY KINDLE FIRE!!!!!!!!

What I Read

RE: New User and KF Owner

Hi Dave and welcome to the Forum

It's interesting to see that more and more people from the UK are getting the Kindle Fire. I think Amazon will be onto a winner when they finally get their arses in gear.

I'm planning on picking up 2 Kindle Fires (one for my and one for the wife) at some point in the future, but fingers crossed it may be released here by then.

HI

No problem

Length 7.5" - top to bottom
width - 4.5"
Depth - 0.5"

It has just 1 button, the power button at the top/bottom (whatever way you hold it), but that also houses the earphone hole as well.

I bought this case from eBay for it, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290638881424

Its very sturdy, holds the kindle in place really well and can be folded/rejigged to stand up dead easily.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your helpful feedback. Seriously thinking of getting it myself !

Noted your comment "Anyway, since getting it ive managed to root it (thanks to her US address) and have started adding apps whenever the mood has taken me."

Can I ask :Was rooting relatively straightforward (have seen various Youtube videos) and is the US card data important to allow re-registering the Fire after the reboot sequence? I would be keen to have full access to the Android Market.

I assume the standard Kindle Fire can be used without registering a credit card, in the UK but still access an Amazon UK account.

Incidentally, I see that firms like Kingston have launched a portable wireless Wi-Drive updated to add the Fire, so access to a much larger disc (32/64 GB?) instead of just the 6.5GB available to users.

Hi Hello

Basically everything I have for the KF sans Apps has come from Amazon UK, the KF was automatically registered to my UK amazon account.

What you can do is add a US credit/debit card and address to your UK account, make the purchase using one click payment and the US card.

All I was doing was getting a working free file explorer, however even for free Apps it requires a US billing address.

You dont need to "re-register" the KF as a result as you're still on your UK account Clapping hands

Once you have the nessecary app, you can root it as you would download the additional "rooting" files from the internet via the tutorials on youtube etc.

Its pretty straightforward, but I watched the vid about 5 or 6 times before I actually began to root it so I had the files in place in the nessecary folders and could do it with no distractions, i'd never worked or used an Android device before so was quite weary

However now I can get .apk app files from the web and install them easily through the file explorer, and also have the Android store in there too, though Ive not used the AS as apk files are easy enough to come by.

RE: New User and KF Owner

Many thanks. Good point as I would not be able to easily transfer files onto the KF without a file explorer , since it does not have any external memory card option.

RE: New User and KF Owner

Well you can transfer books etc, as you get given a kindle email address to send files to.

its basically your name and a number@kindle.com

Im not sure what type of files it reads, but you can transfer docs, mobi pdf and I think zip files, although I dont think if you tried to send a zipped apk file it would open.

Ill try that tonight and give you my feedback
