Question View Hotmail/Gmail On Your Kindle

This has been discussed in part in other threads but it would be nice to get the information in one place and then have this thread as a sticky.

Hotmail
Type this url in to the Kindles browser: mail.live.com/m/ ... You don't need to worry about the http:// bit because the Kindle will add that automatically. This will load the mobile version of Hotmail.

Once you've signed in you should be taken directly to your inbox. If you want to view your other folders (Sent, Drafts etc.) go to the bottom of the page and click "Folders". You should now see all your folders. My recommendation is to bookmark the site at this point. If you bookmark the site with the inbox showing you'll have to scroll down to "folders" every time you want to check them. Doing it this way means you can see all your folders and whether you have new mail.

Gmail
Type this url in to the Kindles browser: bit.ly/g_mail

Sign in and you should be taken to your inbox. Bookmark the page at this point. You can access your other folders easily by clicking the menu button on the gmail page.

Note: Some confusion was caused when trying to reply to an email in Gmail. There was some difficulty getting to the "reply" button after typing your reply. The solution is to press the down arrow a few times on the 5-way. Eventually the cursor/arrow will become active again and you can navigate across to the reply button to send your mail.

Both Hotmail and Gmail should sign in automatically when you next load them up. Just don't remove the tick for "remember my password". They should load pretty quickly too. They do for me anyway.

The details of setting up gmail for Kindle use were found on the following site:

http://kindleworld.blogspot.com...

You should think about downloading the mobiweb.azw file which that site links to. There's some pretty nifty links to various websites which are optimized (or at least bastardized) to work on the Kindle.

Put that .azw on your Kindle and take a look. You can always delete it if you don't like the content.

If you google:

mobile gmail

and go to the first hit (then bookmark it). You can login direct to the html mode for gmail. I've found it easy to use and you still have the familiar page layout.

It's essentially the same as bit.ly/g_mail, just configured for the html display mode.

I've not been to Japan for about 3 years, but Wifi hotspots haven't really taken off their, because they've had the 3G+ (although different standard) for so much longer than us that they never got around to needing it. (The iPhone wasn't that big a deal in Japan and Korea as they'd had better -yes better! - phones for a couple of years... ah! the benefits of closed markets!)

Anyway, if you are or are intending to be a long-time resident then perhaps a "Pocket Wifi" (marketed as "3"s Mifi in the UK) would be an advantage.

This is emobile's offering. Softbank do an equivalent too.

Try using the mobile site... it's basically just a narrow column of text with far less of the crap that'll stop the Kindle browser in its tracks:

Talk-Talk Mobile: http://mobile.talktalk.co.uk

Ganbatte !

Sorry... just re-read your original email... this probably is the site you're using already!
Out of ideas if that's the case.

Hello I Clavdivs.
Many thanks for this information. It has worked for me and I am now checking my gmail via my beloved Kindle. Thumbs Up

RE: View Hotmail/Gmail On Your Kindle

I have found that the Kindle is quick to "lose" any cached info such as passwords etc for accessing sites such as gmail. Not a bad thing as there is no security on the kindle itself, but it means I have to re-input username (irritating) and password (acceptable) every time I access gmail.

I have also found that the nice quick "mobile" gmail format only loads if I input username / password, login to gmail (see the "normal" pc view) and then go back to the bookmarks and select the mobile url for gmail from the list of bookmarks.

Does anyone else have this issue?
