Hey Elaine, There are so many quotes there... I'm not sure what you're agreeing with! I hope it's that Dark Tidings is right up your street!! |
RE: 10 Reasons to buy a bookThe top 4 points are the same, albeit in a slightly different order. There aren't really any big points to note, except that maybe Cover Design seems more important in the US. RE: 10 Reasons to buy a book (US results are in!)Personally I like recommendations, but if I like an author's style then I'm likely to buy more e.g. John Grisham & Terry Pratchett. |

I'm glad this was bumped up because it's a very intriguing thread. I agree with Elaine: the negatives are also very important to me. If the blurb is badly written or the title feels naff or the cover's poor or it's allocated to a genre that's not one of my favourites then I would probably avoid it. Take The Casual Vacancy for example: the title's meaningless, the blurb makes it sound boring and the cover's particularly bad. The genre is 'contemporary fiction' which neither entices me nor puts me off. I look further because it's J K Rowling after all (and I loved Harry Potter) but then the kiss of death comes from the reviews: it has over 120 reviews with only 1 star. I've seen enough and I look no further. I think it would be interesting to run a poll on the negatives, in other words 'What stops you buying a book?' But before I do I'd like to pose a few questions: 1. This hasn't been done already has it? 2. If not, does anyone agree it might be a good idea? (I'll go for it if at least one person thinks it is) 3. And if so, should it be the same 10 reasons to vote on? It feels to me like that would make sense and give an interesting comparison with the 'positive' poll. On the other hand price can be off-putting so I'm wondering if I should replace 'read others by the author' with 'price'. RE: 10 Reasons to buy a book (US results are in!)I think many of the NOTs will just be the flip side of reasons to buy... if someone is generally attracted by the blurb, then a poor blurb will make them not buy. I, for one, would be interested to see if that's the case i.e. will the 'NOT' results be roughly the reverse of this poll. |

It should definitely be in the 'NOT' poll if you do one, but it definitely shouldn't replace 'read others by author'... there are loads of books I wouldn't buy because I read one by the author and didn't like the style. I'd replace 'Recommendations' because it's not often someone says 'don't read that book' or people don't a buy a book because no one has recommended it to them. Ken, what you say makes sense since 'Independent reviews' effectively covers 'recommendations' in a negative poll Steve Reader of books using paper, android and iPod (for unabridged audiobooks).
