RE: 10 Reasons to buy a book

I don't think I've ever read a book that I have seen traditionally advertised...

At the moment, I'm sorry to see "Read others by the Author" at the top, because that's a hard one to challenge for one-book authors like me. "The blurb" at number two is encouraging though... and I have been getting help with my blurb in another post.

Interesting that you thought so. My first thought was "hey, I must go ahead and write some more books" Big Grin

Dorte, I had the same thought initially, until I realised that if no-one reads the first book, then you're never a 'read others by the author' author Confused

Actually, I'm really positive and I love writing (and I also love Dark Tidings!). My second book is on the way and I hope there'll be plenty of readers who'll get it because they enjoyed the first in the DT series.

Well, now and then even I try new authors. I remind myself that Ruth Rendell and P.D. James were new once so I do give some new writers a chance - and once I am hooked, they can count on me unless their standard slips terribly.

RE: 10 Reasons to buy a book

One reason that I didn't see listed (but I may have missed it) is that I've met the author on a forum, liked them and thought I'd try their book simply because they seem nice. I've read some really good books that way. It's not forum buzz, because some of these people are very quiet and don't seem hugely popular with everyone else. But I like them, so I check out their books. Cool

Dorte, what inspires you to take the chance on new authors? What would make you look at Dark Tidings?

Weeeeellll, I like the cover and the idea of a medieval wizard, but a computer hacker .....
I read the Harry Potter books after my children, but it takes quite a lot to tempt me with fantasy. It´s probably the same with my story, "The Cosy Knave" - either you like cosies, or you think they are a waste of time.

RE: 10 Reasons to buy a book

I wonder if you need a number of polls to see what influences various stages of the the buying process, ie. a cover and title will see me pick up or click on a title to read the blurb, whereas a good blurb and genre will see me open up and read the the first page.

A bad cover and title means I'll never get as far as reading the blurb, unless I've seen a good review or read some buzz about it.

Just some thoughts.
