What I Read

Download

I received my new Kindle 4 from the man in the red suite. This is the first time I have tried to use one. On the Amazon site it says there is a new update (already), but when I tried to download it via my pc (I use Vista) windows says it can`t open the file. Is there some programme I need to download onto my pc to enable me to receive these downloads etc.
On a completely different note, is it possible to make folders within collections i.e. have all books by one author in a folder with the authors name, and then put that folder into a collection i.e. thrillers.
Thanks in advance

The updates are normally automatically sent to your Kindle by Amazon, if you want to do it manually you copy the file to the Kindle and then tell the kindle to update itself, it then sees the firmware on the kindle and updates. You don't need to run it on the PC, just copy it to the Kindle. Be careful doing it manually though if your not 100% sure its the right firmware and your happy with doing the update. A messed up firmware updated can prevent the kindle from working.

You can't at the moment, hopefully it will come, but what you can do is have a book in many collection. So you can have your authors collections and also have a Genre collection as well.

RE: Download

Thanks for the answers. As for the second question re collections, thanks I can stop trying to do it now lol. As for the download, am I correct in thinking then that Amazon will automatically download these updates direct to my Kindle without me knowing, or should my Kindle tell me there is an update available then let me make the decision whether to update or not.
Thanks again (sorry to be a pain, but I am not as young as I used to be and technology tends to baffles me.

HuhHuh

I might be wrong but I don't think it gives you the option, it just silently updated. You can prevent it by leaving wireless turn off but at some point you would have to turn it back on to add purchased books Sad
