Ubuntu 11.10 - Superb

I haven't really used Ubuntu in the past, generally preferring SuSe, but having downloaded the latest version to run on my netbook and in VMware, I have to say that it really is fantastic.

If you're a Linux fan or are looking for something way better than windows to run on your netbook then it's well worth a look.

I use Linux Mint on an older Dell D610 laptop. The version I use is based on Ubuntu but I prefer the look and feel of Linux Mint over straight Ubuntu. I've set the up the laptop to multi-boot with XP Pro, Linux Mint, Zorin OS (Ubuntu based too) and an Ubuntu server edition for testing purposes. Linux Mint is the one I use the most.

I've not tried Mint - how does it do on a netbook. Since the Moblin/Meego project went belly up the Unity interface in Ubuntu seems to be a very good replacement.

There is a cut down version which may run better on a netbook. I believe that's called Linux Mint LXDE. Myself, I haven't tried it on a netbook yet, but looking on the Linux Mint forum, others have found it runs well.

RE: Ubuntu 11.10 - Superb

I needed to run my son up a Minecraft server so managed to resurrect an old Dell laptop with 256Mb RAM and 1Ghz P4 processor. Tried a handful of "cut-down" Linux builds. LUbuntu was good (Light Ubuntu) but still a little bloated. I tried a few other but ended up using Puppy Linux (there is a Ubuntu flavour of that too if you like it!). It loads in a heartbeat, recognises all the on-board hardware, the wireless works well and I can run the Minecraft server for the wee-man with out the laptop having a seizure Smile

if you're looking for a fast, featured and light linux I would recommend taking Puppy for a walk Wink
