Kindle Survey

Hi All

My name is Niall and I am an IT student at Sunderland University. I am currently doing a UXD (usability) study on the Kindle and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could spare 2 minutes to complete a short on-line survey. Its totally anonymous and just ticking boxes (no typing).

To complete the survey just follow the link http://eyejudge.com/kindle

If you can help I really would appreciate it.

Thanks again

Niall

RE: Kindle Survey

I did the survey, however I assumed that right was good and left was bad, but this wasn't consistent.

RE: Kindle Survey

Hi Joo

Thanks for taking the time to complete the survey. When designing a survey are lectures have instructed us to construct them like that to prevent users from just ticking and not reading but I do agree with you that it makes it very confusing.

Thanks for the feed back and thanks again for taking the time to help much appreciated.

Hi Niall,

Not wishing to interfere with your research in any way, nor do I know what you're actually trying to research, but in my experience some of the most interesting and productive survey questions come in the form of freeform questions such as:
1. What would you change about your kindle?
2. What do you really like about your kindle?
3. What improvements would you make to the navigation on your kindle?
4. What are your feelings on digital publishing now that you've experienced (and invested in) it?

This approach not only allows you to focus in on product weaknesses, but also allows you to tap into lots of new ideas from willing participants. Overall I think it gives a lot more insight, which multiple option answers can never achieve.

In answer to my own questions:
1. I'd like it if when I pick up the Kindle it displays the cover and back of whatever book I'm reading, just as I would do with a 'real' book. And obviously very easy to do in software. It would make it 'more like' a book.
2. Its made me read a lot more. Free books have started me looking at classics more, yet I've been been more than happy to buy new ones very readily indeed. Whispernet is damned good. Amazon's 'samples' system is fantastic.
3. I find the navigation slightly clunky. For experienced IT users it should be a lot faster, but the interface limits what you can do. It seems very slow to navigate for a modern product, the new 'keyboardless' options can only make this worse.
4. I never thought I'd say this, but I suspect I'll buy almost all my paperbacks in Kindle format. Amazon's policy of storing purchases in an accessible 'cloud' for multiple devices makes me believe that my purchases will always be available even if I upgrade my device or if it fails catastrophically. I haven't explained this very well, nor will I here.

Regards

Jon

I've just filled it your survey as well Niall and I agree with Joo. I did read your questions but I didn't pay much attention to the sliders scaling and wrongly assumed how they were working. I really think this is a mistake and will lead to false results. I did spot it just as I got to the end and managed to correct them before submitting but others may not.

Quote: When designing a survey are lectures have instructed us to construct them like that to prevent users from just ticking and not reading but I do agree with you that it makes it very confusing.

I think this would be ok with wordy answers such as in a multiple choice list where you ask the same question in a different way to see if peoples answers are consistent but I don't think you should do it when using a slider or giving 0-10 values . A better way would be to keep the sliders consistent but load the question in the opposite way.

e.g.
Rate the Navigation functions of the kindle menus (Poor) 0-10 (Excellent)

You could then repeat the question with a twist later in the survey

e.g.
The Kindle's navigation menu makes the kindle difficult to operate (Disagree) 0 - 10 (Agree)

RE: Kindle Survey

Hi Niall

I've completed your survey.

Although I am sure the results will be useful, I thought some of the questions were a bit ambiguous.

As an example, one question asked whether books were downloaded 'directly by the Kindle' or 'Via Amazon' - but this completely fails to offer any other possibilty. I use Calibre to find and download books to my PC from Smashwords, Gutenburg Project, Amazon and many other places. These books are then sorted and transferred to my Kindle via USB. So how do I answer the question?

Though I think you have done a reasonable job in designing the questionaire, and made a good decision by asking KUF members to help you gather data, great care must be taken in the phrasing of questions.

I agree with the points made by Phil above.

RE: Kindle Survey

Hi Everyone

Thanks for taking the time to complete the survey and the feedback you have left, This information (including the feed back here) is invaluable for my study.

Although a little confusing the the switch in the scales is a deliberate feature of the survey, this method is designed to prevent candidates from tick all to the left so to speak when completing the survey and helps in the accuracy of the data collected. I am making some adjustments to the welcome page to give candidates a heads up that the scales change from question to question.

The Data gathered is to help build user persona profiles. The aim of the survey is to analyse the user experience and is not connected to any kind of marketing development.

Once the survey is complete and I have gathered the results I will publish them to the EyeJudge web site and provide a link in this thread to anyone who is interested in seeing them.

Again many thanks for your time, help and support.

Niall
