NOW THAT HARRY POTTER HAS FINISHED...

What kind of children's book series would you like to take off next?

Personally, I'm weary of the sorcery/magic themes now. When Harry became a hit, the market was swamped with copycat wizard stories.

As a science-fiction fan, my instinct is to hope something with a sci-fi slant will emerge and become a hit. That said, I also love The Famous Five stories. So would we welcome a modern slant on that?

RE: NOW THAT HARRY POTTER HAS FINISHED...

I really enjoyed the books by Garth Nix - Sabriel,Lirael etc. These too have quite dark themes like the latter Harry Potter books, but maybe it's time for a change. I think kids are more demanding now particularly with video games always depicting sci-fi or dark themes, so I think anything new would need to appeal to these kind of tastes.

I really loved Enid Blyton's books, but I think times have changed so much that this type of thing just wouldn't appeal so much now. I'd loved to be wrong about this though.

I would love Enid Blyton books to be popular again, but I think the age of innocence and nice gentle stories has long gone I am afraid. All children want now is to grow up way too fast and either be scared to death by horrible monsters, or nasty out of this world events. Sad

I agree about Enid Blyton, I spent many a day reading the Famous Five and Secret Seven as a youngster. I'm not sure todays kids would find it as appealing though

When I wrote my book (link in my signature) I wanted to write the kind of gripping story that Enid Blyton wrote. Yes, mine is a fantasy but then isn't The Faraway Tree?

I've been told that Chamaeleon is fast-paced and exciting with a likeable hero by those who have read it. Only time will tell if it appeals to today's youngsters as much as the adventure stories of our youth appealed to us.

RE: NOW THAT HARRY POTTER HAS FINISHED...

I don't think we have a lot of say in what will become the next hit. Harry Potter seemed to come out of nowhere and none of the other series have come even close in terms of crossover or sales (even the much vaunted ones like Percy Jackson).

The Hunger Games seems to the next one with potential, certainly the books have managed to reach a critical mass and there is a movie on the way.

I don't think we can look at it from a genre point of view, good stories with good characters sell, finding one with universal appeal is the difficulty.
