What I Read

RE: Katie W Stewart - fantasy author

Some may be glad to hear I've been working hard lately! It's difficult to believe, but true. I recently had a couple of articles published in the British 'Writing Magazine' and another one is due out in December. I have only one chapter to go on 'Song of the Jikhoshi', sequel to Treespeaker and then I'll put it away until December. I find I edit better when I come back to it later. I'm hoping to publish it in January. In the meantime, I've put my name down to do NaNoWriMo in November, during which I hope to make a good start on 'Ellyeth's Harp', sequel to Mark of the Dragon Queen.

In other news - a few weeks ago, I took part in my very first Writer's Festival, run at our local library. I gave a workshop on editing which was a lot more fun than I imagined it would be. I learned a lot from the other writers who were there, too, and got a great free dinner!

RE: Katie W Stewart - fantasy author

The article I wrote for the December issue of "Writing Magazine" is now out. Yes, I know it's still October, but they're keen!

My husband sniffed a bit when I told him how much I'd earned for writing the article. He didn't think it was much for a week's hard work. But then I pointed out how long it takes to write a novel and how little you get in return. That put it into perspective. I don't think I'll ever be rich, but I won't stop writing.

I received this present from my 'Kris Kringle' at work today, full of chocolates! Isn't it lovely? And what a great idea! The only trouble is, I'm terrified of breaking it!

RE: Katie W Stewart - fantasy author

I've just finished the first edit of 'Song of the Jikhoshi', sequel to Treespeaker. It's a fair bit shorter than the first book, which worries me a bit, but something else I noticed as I was editing was how often one particular character 'gave a sad smile' or the equivalent. It was annoying even me by the end! I've got a lot of characters 'shaking' too. I need a good dose of imagination to get them doing something better than shake when they're scared!

My second has worked out a chunk shorter than the first. I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you tell the story as it's meant to be, then it is the right length, regardless of how long the first one is.

Scared - dizzy, heart pounding... It's hard to get away from clichés for 'scared', isn't it?

Oh, I have hearts pounding, thudding, jumping and skipping all over the place!

And then there's the eyes... I have eyes doing all sorts of things that eyes just can't do.

Less is more, as they say. It may be a tired old cliche, but that doesn't make it less true.

RE: Katie W Stewart - fantasy author

I had a bit of a thrill today when I found out that a cover I did for someone had been chosen by Shelfbuzz this weekend as one of their 'hand-picked' titles - chosen because the cover shows that the author cared enough about their story to pay for a decent cover. Actually I did the cover as thanks for some editing the author did for me, but we won't tell them that! Big Grin
