RE: Kindle General FAQ 2011

Hi Lou,
I've gone through the FAQs and can't find an answer to a question. Being new to the forum I may be getting lost.
My wife and I both have a Kindle and they are both registered to my Amazon account. My problem is how to separate my ebooks from hers and vice versa. All her books are on my Kindle and all mine are on hers. Is there a simple solution that doesn't involve creating another Amazon account?

Tony

Hi Tony
The only place her books should show up on yours, unless you choose to download them, is in the Archive section. The Archive is just a list of books that are available to your account that are not currently on your Kindle. So her books aren't actually taking any space on your kindle nor yours on hers.

The only way to keep her books out of your Archive would unfortunately be to create separate accounts

All my books automatically download onto my kindle as soon as I 1click. I presume this is happening to Tony.

I think Phil's right that the only way to avoid each others books is to create two accounts.

No, you don't have to have another account. That would mean you can't share the maybe one or two that you might want to.
You can delete them off your kindle. They will stil be in your account if you do something wrong. Test it out with some freebies to start.

When you buy a book, you can choose which Kindle it downloads to, that way you can have your books and your wife hers. Hope that helps. It's much better than having two different accounts. Smile

I have four kindles on my account and we share books without a problem. I never look in the Archive section so I don't get flooded with everyone else's books. However if they recommend a book they have read I can have it sent to my Kindle without having to re-purchase it.

As Sujay mentioned when you buy a book on Amazon it gives you a drop down lists of your Kindles and you can choose which one it goes to. It doesn't go to all of them. At any point you can have it sent to any of the other Kindles.

I would keep your accounts combined Tony, it makes things much easier and cheaper.

You can see above I get the option to send to our four kindles as well as my three Mac's, an IPad or my mobile phone.

{edit} Remember the Archive section on your kindle takes up no real space. Its just a list of books which have been purchased on your account and which aren't currently on your Kindle. So other than seeing this list it isn't compromising your kindle in any way.

RE: Kindle General FAQ 2011

Section 2 of the FAQ says "Also bear in mind that Kindle only allows a finite number of downloads per book, typically 5-6, but this varies with publishers etc." Is that still true? Consider that:

* Kindles are standardising on a smaller amount of internal storage,
* There is more emphasis on Kindle apps,
* Amazon are moving to a more cloud-based architecture.

I couldn't find anything in the Amazon help pages about this other than "There are rare circumstances in which content may not remain available for re-download. For instance, if the publisher who originally made the content available to us for sale on the Kindle Store did not have the right to do so or is sued for defamation in connection with the content..."

Does anyone know whether there has been a policy change or where limited downloads are documented by Amazon?

RE: Kindle General FAQ 2011

I haven't had a problem with it, we mostly have different tastes in books anyway so its rare a book would be on all 4 devices. I have had books on several devices when I'm reading as I sometimes syncing between my Kindle, iPad and Mobile Phone. More so now just between my Kindle and Mobile Phone when I don't want to take the Kindle out with me.

As for a maximum number of downloads, I don't think Amazon wouldn't just delete it off your device when you hit your limit (if they still have one) they are more likely to prevent you from adding it to a new device and to be honest I don't really care what Amazon's policy is, I bought the book. I always make back up copies of all my data and if Amazon one day said you can't view it any more then I'm not sure that wouldn't really be too big an issue to sort out but it would be the last purchase I would make with Amazon should that day ever come.

Apple have a similar policy with Music and Films in that you can only authorise a certain number of computers to an account. They do allow you to reauthorise machines though so as you upgrade your computers and devices you can update your list of authorised machines.

RE: Kindle General FAQ 2011

Dear all,

I was wondering if someone here could help me because I am a true layman when it comes to e-readers:
I'm from the Netherlands but when I was in the USA I bought the Amazon Kindle 4 for my parents, with the purpose to read Vietnamese books on it.

I bumped into this link: http://livingenzyme.webs.com/vietnameseebooks.htm where it is possible to download Vietnamese novels.

I executed the described steps on my laptop and could download a few books. I transferred these books to my Kindle and they appeared on the Kindle screen.

When reading the book, all Vietnamese characters are perfect but only the first 8 pages Sad after the first 8 pages all characters are not recognized anymore which makes the rest of the book unreadable.

Does anyone know how this happens and how I can fix this? Thank you very much in advance!
