The Hunchback Assignments by Arthur Slade

The Hunchback Assignments by Arthur Slade is my recent foray into the Steampunk genre. The fantasstic looking cover caught my eye in the first place.

It's the story of Modo who is taken in as a baby by Mr Socrates who trains him to be his agent. I don't like giving the story away in my reviews, so go read the blurb to see what it's about Big Grin

Due to mention of orphans at the start and being taken in by a mysterious rich gentleman, I was thinking along the lines of Lemony Snicket, but as it got into the adventure I was picturing the film Young Sherlock Holmes in that they were running around Victorian London.

This book is aimed at the younger market, yet was certainly grown up enough for me. It was a very visual story, I could imagine the look and smells as described.

I will certainly check out more by Arthur Slade. This book is free at the moment and a fantastic introduction to a great writer, so get it quick and start reading.
Please put a bowl of water out for hedgehogs and other night-time visitors, you might just save their life.
While you are at it, feed the birds too. Thumbs Up And come and talk about it at Garden Wildlife Forum

Thanks for that joo, I had seen it but didn't think it was my thing, but having read your review I have now downloaded it. Smile

Just found another of his books free Draugr. Have got that one as well now! Smile It does say that it is specifically a children's book, but I don't mind.

Thanks joo. I appreciate the kind words. And I've been meaning to watch young Sherlock again. Oddly enough the idea for this series came when a publisher pitched me the idea of writing a young Sherlock series and I pitched back with "what if I melded him with The Hunchback of Notre Dame and made him a secret agent." Ideas come from odd places.

It doesn't matter where the ideas come from as long as they come! That's the important thing. Smile
