IMPORTANT : Authors - Recommending your own books

Since the launch of our book recommendation system yesterday, we have already had a number of authors recommending their own books, which is going against the whole point of the system.

As a result of a few people also creating multiple accounts to recommend their own books (you know who you are), we now have a strict policy whereby it is against the rules for an author to recommend their own book and strictly forbidden for an author to create or encourage the creation of additional forum profiles for the sole intent of recommending their book.

Anyone caught doing this will have their accounts suspended or banned and possibly their book banned from the recommendations list permanently.

If you have already recommended your own book prior to this post, we will have an amnesty, but in future there will be consequences.

I'm sorry it's had to come to this, but as usual it's a case of a few rotten apples.

Lou, if Harper Collins had run Authonomy the way you run KUF, it would still be the fabulous site it was when it launched.

Thumbs Up

Very sensible Lou. I realise that self-publishing authors want/need to promote their work themselves but filling up the board with self-recommendations inclines me not to look at them and if I thought that authors were in fact fabricating reviews it would make me discount their entire output.

As a mod on another very different board I am aware that the list owner and sometimes mods have access to the sophisticated tracking and anti-spamming software which makes this kind of thing very easy to spot.

I've seen this enough that it shouldn't surprise me, but still I can't help being a little stunned at the fact that people will do it. How can they believe they won't end up looking rude or being banned? Not to mention, how do they even find the time?

Shaking my head.

Thanks, Lou, for keeping on top of everything.

RE: IMPORTANT : Authors - Recommending your own books

Speaking as a reader of this particular forum, if an author joins in, I will more than likely get interested in their book and buy it and recommend it. I will state as an example Talli and Lexi (not to say they are the only ones, but I've been vocal in loving their work recently and only found them here and want to spread the word). There are other writers here who just promote their books (as they are allowed to do so) and I'm sure this recommend a book wasn't set up just for more promotion. If people like their books then their job is done and the books will get recommended.
